Barbing offers a variety of highlights for a stay: waterside recreation within the municipality, architectural history in the town and nature in the surrounding area. When planning your stay, you can combine these local attractions with other destinations in the wider Regensburg travel region. Activities range from swimming and rowing to architecture and landscapes.

Lake, Rinsen and Local Trails

Lake Sarching lies in the Danube plain between Sarching and Friesheim. Activities there include swimming, beach volleyball, playing football on a sports field and rowing. Each offers a different way to enjoy your time: relax by the water, get active or go for a row. You can take into account which of these activities will shape your stay when planning your trip.

A few local cycling and hiking trails run through the municipality of Barbing, including “Around Barbing” and “Into the Three Lakes Area.” Check the current trail conditions before setting out. Nearby, at the Danube backwater by Barbing, lies the Rinsen natural monument. It is part of the “Danube Floodplain and Alluvial Forests Southeast of Regensburg” landscape conservation area. Since 2009, the Rinsen footbridge has provided gentle access to the water and a view of the natural monument; check whether the footbridge is currently accessible before visiting.

Architecture and History in Barbing

The parish church of St. Martin in Barbing combines a Baroque new building with the surviving eastern choir of its Gothic predecessor. Two building periods thus come together in one building. Nearby, the Kreuzhof Chapel stands on the site considered to be the location of the historic event on the Barbinger Wiese. Whether the chapel was already there at the time is unclear. Barbing therefore brings together architectural landmarks with different historical associations, while the chapel’s uncertain origins remain unresolved.

In the Wider Regensburg Travel Region

The Walhalla is a Neoclassical memorial and hall of honour on the Danube. Since 1842, notable Germans and people associated with German history have been honoured there with marble busts and commemorative plaques. Outside, 52 Doric-style columns define the building. There are several ways to get there: from the Stone Bridge in Regensburg, passenger boats operated by Klinger and Wurm & Noé travel along the Danube to the foot of the Walhalla from Easter through October. Check the specific operating dates before your trip. From the bus stop, an approximately 20-minute walk, including 358 steps, leads to the Walhalla.

Other cultural and scenic destinations in the wider Regensburg travel region offer different highlights. Wolfsegg Castle is one of the best-preserved castle complexes in the region. In Wiesent, the nine-hectare Nepal-Himalaya Park brings together Asian culture and nature. It features a Nepalese temple, a diverse perennial garden and numerous Asian artworks. The park also includes a Himalayan garden and a Chinese garden, as well as more than 6,200 different plant species.

The region also offers different options for active exploration. The signposted Fruit Experience Trail runs for about 34 kilometres from Hemau via Beratzhausen to Kallmünz; twelve large information boards line the cycling route. At Lake Guggenberger near Neutraubling, divers, windsurfers and small-boat sailors can enjoy their sports in a designated area. These activities complement those mentioned at Lake Sarching in Barbing, but are separate destinations in the wider Regensburg travel region.
