Buchloe offers a range of points of interest for planning a trip: local and railway history, marked trails through the town forest, and regular market days. If you are considering Buchloe as a place to stay, these topics can help you shape your own itinerary. For travel by car, its location on the A 96 federal motorway is a clear point of reference: Buchloe lies on the A 96 between Munich and Lindau and has two junctions. From these junctions, direct road connections lead via the B 12 towards Kempten and the Allgäu, and via the B 17 towards Augsburg.

Town and Railway History at the Local History Museum

The Buchloe Local History Museum displays exhibits on local history, as well as models and original items relating to the history of the railway in Buchloe. The railway exhibits provide a specific focus within the story of the town. The museum also has a six-part audio guide in which the radio group from Buchloe Gymnasium presents treasures from the museum. The museum is open on the first Sunday of each month from 2 to 5 p.m.; special and group tours are available on request. As opening arrangements may change, check the hours before your visit.

Another historical landmark is St. Stephen’s Church, the oldest church in Buchloe. A priest of St. Stephen’s is documented for both 1299 and 1311. The museum and the church therefore offer different ways to connect with the town’s history.

Walking Routes and Trails

Buchloe Town Forest has several specially marked circular routes for hiking, Nordic walking and jogging. The Great Town Forest Circular Route is marked with a red dot in both directions and continues beyond the forest to the districts of Honsolgen and Hausen. If you plan to take this route, you can use the red markings as a guide in either direction.

Another option is to follow the Ostallgäu Hiking Trail from Buchloe to its endpoint in Marktoberdorf. There are different types of routes to choose from: circular trails in the town forest and a hiking trail with Marktoberdorf as its named endpoint.

Weekly and Seasonal Market Days

The farmers’ market in Buchloe takes place every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Immleplatz. If your stay falls on a Saturday, you can factor this regular weekly event into your plans. The Christkindlmarkt, by contrast, takes place during Advent: it runs from Friday to Sunday on the second weekend of Advent, at the church car park. For a specific year, it is advisable to check the current event date. This distinguishes the regular weekly market from the seasonal Christkindlmarkt.

Cycling in the Wider Ostallgäu Destination

The wider Ostallgäu destination includes a cycling region certified by the German Cyclists’ Federation (ADFC). The “Schlosspark Cycling Loop in the Allgäu” quality cycle route has been awarded five stars by the ADFC. The regional routes of the cycling region extend across the whole of Ostallgäu, are signposted throughout, range from 25 to 76 kilometres in length, and each have their own theme. When planning a cycling trip in Ostallgäu, the Schlosspark Cycling Loop award and the themes and lengths of the regional routes offer different points of comparison.
