Hiking trails wind through mountain meadows up to the 1,838 m-high Breitenberg, Pfronten’s local mountain. This gives the landscape a clear focal point; at the same time, the experiences differ in theme and according to the season. In summer, Breitenberg offers hiking and mountain biking tours; in winter, skiing, winter hiking and tobogganing are possible. Which activities are available depends on conditions and on whether the facilities are operating.

Breitenberg: Mountain Trails and Legends

The Breitenbergbahn takes hikers by gondola up Breitenberg in just over a quarter of an hour. Check the lift’s current operating status before your trip. This means the mountain offers two different options: hiking trails through mountain meadows and a gondola ride. The Juwelenweg trail on Breitenberg tells legends about the Aggenstein and the Venedigermännlein. Its theme gives a stay on the mountain a different focus from hiking and cycling tours: here, traditional tales take centre stage.

You can also explore Pfronten’s history on a dedicated themed trail: the Trilogie circular trail offers insights into the town’s history. The Pfronten Schalengge race offers another historical perspective. It features the large sledges once used to transport hay and wood from mountain meadows and forests down into the valley. The race has a long tradition. The sledges represent their former purpose, while the competition brings this history to life.

Castle Ruins, High Ropes Course and Other Places

At an elevation of 1,277 m, the Falkenstein castle ruins have a viewing platform offering panoramic views of the Allgäu Alps and the Alpine foothills. The platform thus combines a historic site with sweeping views of the landscape. For a different kind of activity, the Höllschlucht forest high ropes course is located in Pfronten’s Kappel district. It has 11 courses with more than 100 challenges. There is also a 3D archery course at the forest high ropes course. It is located in Pfronten-Kappel, at the foot of the Edelsberg and on the edge of the Höllschlucht gorge.

Playgrounds are also part of the town: Pfronten’s 13 districts have a total of 12 themed playgrounds. For guided outings, Pfronten Tourism offers cycling and snowshoe tours. As these offerings may change, it is advisable to check availability before making plans. There are also groomed trails for classic cross-country skiing and skating around Pfronten; snow conditions and grooming are seasonal and variable.

A Regional Perspective on Ostallgäu

In the wider Ostallgäu travel region, the Hochplatte is the highest mountain at 2,082 metres. Schloss Neuschwanstein is also part of the region’s cultural attractions: since 12 July 2025, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site along with Schloss Linderhof, the Royal House on Schachen and Schloss Herrenchiemsee. Visiting the two royal castles, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, is subject to a specific condition: they can only be visited as part of a guided tour.

When looking for a hotel for your stay in Pfronten, you can first decide on your travel dates and main focus: mountain meadow trails and cycling tours, legends and local history, or winter activities. Activities available on Breitenberg vary between summer and winter; conditions and operating status are also important when making specific plans.
