Sulzberg is located in the heart of the Oberallgäu foothills, around ten kilometres south of Kempten. Looking south, you can see the Allgäu Alps. Kempten to the north and the Alps to the south provide clear geographical reference points for the town’s location.

Castle Ruins, Foothills and Views

Sulzberg Castle Ruins are among the largest and best-preserved castle ruins in the Oberallgäu. The viewing terrace atop the keep offers sweeping views. Sulzberg brings together two distinctive themes: the foothills landscape and the castle’s historical heritage.

The Heinrich Trail and Lake Rottach: Different Highlights

The Heinrich Trail consists of two routes, each 10.5 kilometres long. They pass historical landmarks and feature information boards and play stations for children. The trail starts at Sulzberg Town Hall and passes Jodbad Sulzbrunn. The routes’ identical length provides a consistent distance, while historical themes and play stations shape the character of the trail.

Lake Rottach is located in the municipality of Sulzberg and offers opportunities for swimming, sailing, surfing, diving and fishing. The contrast with the Heinrich Trail is clear: the trail focuses on history along the route and its length, while the lake is all about water activities. When planning, you can decide which of these highlights you would like to focus on.

The summer knightly adventure for families at the castle ruins includes crossbow shooting, jousting, a campfire, stories and a knighting ceremony for children. Before your trip, check whether any events are scheduled for your dates.

Getting to Sulzberg

By car, Sulzberg can be reached from the A7 via the Allgäu motorway interchange and the A980 towards Lindau. There is a Sulzberg motorway exit there. This route provides clear directions for your journey, but does not indicate a driving time.

More options in the wider Oberallgäu travel destination

Visitors exploring the wider Oberallgäu travel destination will find other distinct places to visit. Oberstdorf has 200 kilometres of hiking trails and nature trails. You can also visit the Heini-Klopfer Ski Flying Hill there; the tower lift takes visitors to the viewing platform on the ski-jump tower.

The Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Centre in Immenstadt-Bühl is located right by Lake Alpsee. Its free interactive exhibition explores animals, plants, their habitats and the special features of the protected area. The centre is a 30-minute walk from Immenstadt train station along the “Achis Water Trail” themed path. In bad weather, bus routes 39, 11 and 81 go there. Check walking times and bus connections in advance.

The Allgäu Mountain Farming Museum in Immenstadt-Diepolz is an interactive open-air museum. Its historic buildings document the life of Allgäu mountain farmers; opening is seasonal. These regional destinations complement Sulzberg’s focus with nature, mountain farming life and winter sports.
