Wiggensbach offers several ways to enjoy a stay: local history and exhibitions are at the heart of the Wiggensbach Information Centre, the “WIZ”. Other highlights include St. Pankratius Parish Church, a signposted Nordic walking route, a 27-hole golf course and the organic show dairy. The range of themes spans local history and art, as well as exercise and cheese-making.

Local history and exhibitions at the WIZ

The municipality of Wiggensbach’s local history collection at the WIZ covers geology and local history, as well as rural life, religious folk art and art treasures from the Gothic and Baroque periods. Crafts, trades, agriculture and the school system are also among the topics. The same information centre hosts exhibitions of oil, watercolour, acrylic and mixed-media paintings, as well as sculptures, photographs, craftwork and nativity scenes.

St. Pankratius Parish Church

Another cultural destination in the village is St. Pankratius Parish Church. It is considered Johann Georg Specht’s most significant independent work. Alongside the themes of the local history collection, it offers a second way to explore Wiggensbach’s culture: here, the focus is on an individual church building, while the WIZ presents a broad range of local and everyday history.

Nordic walking and the Wiesengänger Route

A signposted, 10-kilometre Nordic walking route starts at the market square in Wiggensbach and runs via Blender, Schmidsreute and Westenried before returning to Wiggensbach. The named places and the starting and finishing point make the circuit easy to follow.

The Wiesengänger Route covers a different scale: it extends for a total of 274 kilometres over 15 stages. Its route passes, among other places, through Marktoberdorf, Kaufbeuren, Bad Wörishofen, Ottobeuren, Bad Grönenbach, Altusried, Wiggensbach and Schmidsfelden, continuing as far as Eglofs. The 10 kilometres refer to the signposted route starting at the market square; the 274 kilometres are the total length of the staged route. This distinction helps you tell a local circuit from a longer hiking route.

Golf and cheese-making

Golfclub Waldegg-Wiggensbach e. V. has a 27-hole course described as Germany’s highest-altitude golf course and its only mountain golf course. At hole 5, on Kreuzberg, the tee is at an altitude of 1,011 metres and is described as Germany’s highest-altitude tee. It offers wide-ranging views. If you plan to play golf during your stay, check current visitor arrangements in advance.

On a guided tour of the Wiggensbach Organic Show Dairy, you can get a behind-the-scenes look and see how Allgäu hay milk is turned into speciality cheeses. The tour focuses on the production process. Check current visitor arrangements in advance if you would like to include it in your plans.

Other places in the wider Oberallgäu travel region

The wider Oberallgäu travel region also offers attractions in other specifically named places. Oberstdorf has 200 kilometres of hiking trails and nature trails. You can also visit the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill there; the tower lift takes visitors to the viewing platform on the ski jump tower.

The Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Centre is in Immenstadt-Bühl, right by Lake Alpsee. From Immenstadt station, you can reach it on foot in 30 minutes via the “Achis Wasserweg” themed trail. In bad weather, bus routes 39, 11 and 81 go there. Check bus connections and journey times again before setting off.
