Inselweiher Pond in Dietmannsried is a place to take a lunch break and switch off for a moment. The Motte by the pond adds a historical connection; in winter, two easy cross-country ski trails of different lengths are available. The Iller-Kapf loop also leads from the train station to a destination at the Motte. You can therefore choose how to focus on the local attractions: a break, history or route planning.

Inselweiher Pond and the Motte: A break with a touch of history

The Motte at Inselweiher Pond is an earthen mound surrounded by water, where a castle once stood. Around 1100, an unknown local nobleman built the castle on Inselweiher, the Motte. The date is approximate, and the builder is unknown. The pond itself offers a very different reason to visit. Here, you can take a lunch break outdoors and switch off for a while. The site thus combines a simple place to pause with the history of the Motte, without requiring a longer program.

Winter cross-country ski trails: 1.5 or 8 kilometres

Two easy cross-country ski trails in Dietmannsried differ mainly in length. Trail No. 7 is 1.5 kilometres long and suitable for both classic and skate skiing. Trail No. 1 runs from Dietmannsried to Reicholzrieder Moos, is 8 kilometres long, and is also suitable for both styles. It is connected, among other places, to Oberried, Käsers and Reicholzried, as well as to Reicholzrieder Straße and Henkelsweg in Dietmannsried. Both trails are rated easy, so the longer route is not listed as more difficult. If you prefer a shorter distance, No. 7 is the more compact option. No. 1 offers more distance and has several named connections. Before setting out, check current snow and trail conditions.

A route to the church at the Motte

The Iller-Kapf loop starts at the train station in Dietmannsried on Laubener Straße and heads towards the town centre. Its destination is the church at the Motte. This route therefore has both a clearly named starting point and a destination with a historical connection. Check the latest route information before setting out. This lets you consider the walk as a separate planning option alongside the ski trails, without combining the two into a fixed day’s itinerary.

More places in the wider Oberallgäu travel destination

Other places in the wider Oberallgäu travel destination offer their own highlights. Oberstdorf has 200 kilometres of hiking trails and nature trails. You can also visit the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill there; the tower lift takes visitors to the viewing platform on the ski jump tower. Hiking and views offer a different focus from the Motte and ski trails in Dietmannsried.

The Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Centre is located in Immenstadt-Bühl, right by Lake Alpsee. Its free-to-access interactive exhibition explores animals, plants, their habitats and features of the protected area. From Immenstadt train station, you can reach the centre on foot via the “Achis Wasserweg” themed trail in 30 minutes. In bad weather, bus routes 39, 11 and 81 go there. Check walking times and bus connections before your trip.

Another cultural site in the Oberallgäu is the Allgäu Mountain Farmers’ Museum in Immenstadt-Diepolz. This interactive open-air museum documents the lives of Allgäu mountain farmers in historic buildings. It is open seasonally. It therefore offers a different historical focus from the castle at Dietmannsried’s Motte: here, the focus is on the lives of mountain farmers, while the Motte is the site of a former castle on an earthen mound surrounded by water.
