Fischen i.Allgäu can be explored through several distinct themes: the Iller and its floodplains, the Weidach forest, and local and winter sports history. The Iller flows through Fischen; the floodplain forest in Fischen is called Weidach. Fischen is a therapeutic climatic health resort and comprises seven hamlets.
Weidach and the Iller floodplains
In Weidach, twelve gates tell the story of the floodplain forest and its significance to people; they also introduce visitors to the forest and its inhabitants. The Squirrel Forest offers a different focus: its adventure trail has five stations called “Children’s Gates” that share fascinating facts about the lives of squirrels. In Weidach, the focus is on the forest’s history and the importance of the floodplain forest; in the Squirrel Forest, it is on the lives of squirrels. Nature themes thus range from the floodplain forest to one of the species that inhabits it.
From Fischen station, a level, largely barrier-free walking path leads through the Iller floodplains to Auwaldsee lake. The walk takes about 20 minutes and covers around 1.5 kilometres. Local path conditions may vary. Thanks to their level terrain and width, the paths in Weidach are also well suited to people with disabilities. Two specific features help visitors plan their way: a route with named endpoints and approximate time and distance information, as well as paths in Weidach whose level surface and width make them easier to use.
Hiking trails through varied landscapes
The “Waterways – Towards the Source” hike follows varied walking and hiking paths along the Iller, through floodplain forests, quiet woodland stretches and open meadows. The Fischen Trilogy Trail runs along the foot of the Allgäu Alps and offers the atmosphere of a floodplain forest, the Iller, Auwaldsee lake and views of the Hörnerkette mountain range. The landscapes have different focal points: the “Waterways” route includes open meadows and quiet woodland stretches, while Auwaldsee lake and views of the Hörnerkette are notable features of the Trilogy Trail. Check the current route length and difficulty before setting out. The therapeutic climate hiking trails in Fischen and the surrounding area were developed in collaboration with the Chair of Public Health at the University of Munich and local spa doctors.
Church history and winter sports
The parish church of St. Verena and the FIS Ski Museum offer different historical perspectives. The earliest documented consecration date of the parish church is 1126. The FIS Ski Museum’s exhibits showcase the history of alpine and Nordic skiing, as well as other winter sports. Local history and the history of winter sports thus stand side by side as distinct cultural themes.
