A riverside walk and a trail through the village’s history offer two different ways to explore Lauben: along the Leubas and Iller, and at historical sites throughout the municipality. Lauben is a municipality in the Oberallgäu district of Bavaria. Local leisure activities include an extensive cycling network and various sports facilities. Those who also explore the wider Oberallgäu travel destination will find additional attractions in other locations.

Riverside walks, nature habitats and cycling

A walking route follows the Leubas to its confluence with the Iller. The nature habitats around Illeraltwasser are also among Lauben’s local recreational opportunities. Cyclists can make use of an extensive cycling network. The Iller-Kapf circular route can also be started from Lauben: Lauben is an alternative starting point. Check the latest access information before setting out, as route access may change. The walk has the river confluence as a specific landmark; cycling offers a different focus for planning your outing.

Sports and leisure facilities

Lauben’s sports and leisure facilities include sports fields, tennis courts, a Bavarian curling lane, a cross-country ski trail and a skate park. They cater to a range of activities: field sports and tennis, as well as Bavarian curling, cross-country skiing and skateboarding. Individual facilities may have their own operating rules; check the relevant conditions in advance.

History in 39 stops

The Lauben Historical Trail has 39 stops and leads through historically significant places in the municipality. One landmark in the village’s history is St. Ulrich’s Parish Church, first mentioned in 1273. Its bell, cast in 1424, survived both world wars and is still in use. Another historical trace is Burgus Stielings: this Roman watch post with living quarters was built around 370 AD to defend the imperial frontier. Burg Leubas is a medieval castle site; it was probably destroyed in 1525 during the German Peasants’ War. Together, these landmarks trace a story from Roman frontier defense through the Middle Ages to the history of the church.

A history of cheese

Käserei Champignon was founded in 1908 by J. Hirschle and L. Immler. At the time, 500 liters of milk were processed each day to make a Camembert; it was named Champignon Camembert for its fresh mushroom aroma.

More destinations in the Oberallgäu

If you include the wider Oberallgäu travel destination, you’ll find additional attractions in other locations, not in Lauben. Oberstdorf offers 200 kilometers of hiking trails and nature trails. You can also visit the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill there; the tower lift takes visitors to the observation platform atop the ski jump tower. In Immenstadt-Bühl, the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park Center is right beside Lake Alpsee. Its free-to-access interactive exhibition explores animals, plants, their habitats and the protected area’s special features. From Immenstadt station, the center is a 30-minute walk along the “Achis Wasserweg” themed trail; in bad weather, bus routes 39, 11 and 81 go there. Check bus services and journey times again before travelling.
