Esselbach brings together Franconian half-timbered history, church art and a 6 km cultural trail. The 1617 rectory, Lower Franconia’s oldest surviving post office building and the parish church of St. Margaretha each add a distinct architectural touch. The “Post Road and Milk Road” cultural trail runs through Esselbach, Kredenbach and Steinmark and starts at the Die Weed recreation area. The choice therefore ranges from historic buildings to a route through several districts.

Half-timbered Houses, Postal History and Church Art

The Esselbach rectory was built in 1617 in the typical Franconian half-timbered style. Esselbach is also home to Lower Franconia’s oldest surviving post office building, dating from the second half of the 17th century. Beneath the plaster of this historic post office building lies decorative half-timbering comparable to that of the rectory. The Franconian half-timbered construction defines the rectory’s appearance, while the post office building’s distinctive feature is its decorative work hidden beneath the plaster. The comparison draws attention to the construction style in one case and to a detail beneath the plaster in the other.

The parish church of St. Margaretha in Esselbach was built in 1779 in the early Neoclassical style. Its pulpit and organ façade are Baroque, date from around 1700 and come from the former collegiate monastery of Triefenstein. The building and its furnishings thus represent different periods: the church dates from the late 18th century, while the two furnishings date from around 1700. To understand their historical context, it is worth distinguishing the building from its furnishings: the church is early Neoclassical, while the pulpit and organ façade are Baroque.

Near Esselbach, at Trieb in the direction of Baumgartshof, stands a wayside shrine dating from 1487, one of the oldest in Lower Franconia. Its date places this historic landmark further back in time than the buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries mentioned above.

Cultural Trail, Recreation Area and Countryside

The 6 km “Post Road and Milk Road” cultural trail starts at Die Weed in Esselbach and runs through Esselbach and the districts of Kredenbach and Steinmark. Its length, starting point and the places it passes through are therefore useful for planning. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

The “Die Weed” recreation area is open to local residents and visitors. It has a large playground, a beach volleyball court, table tennis tables and a bocce court. Die Weed is therefore both the starting point of the cultural trail and a place with its own recreational facilities. When planning, you can take these different features into account without confusing them with the route itself.

Esselbach is a holiday resort on an extensive high plateau in the heart of Spessart Nature Park. This provides a scenic setting for its buildings and recreational activities: alongside the town’s history and the cultural trail, there is its location within a nature park.

Main-Spessart as the Wider Setting

The wider travel destination of Main-Spessart combines vineyards, water and woodland in a holiday region. In Spessart Nature Park, walking options range from short strolls to hikes lasting several days. The Main Hiking Trail covers a different scale: it is around 500 kilometres long, with just under 100 kilometres running through the district of Main-Spessart and connecting Karlstadt, GemĂĽnden a.Main, Lohr a.Main, Rothenfels and Marktheidenfeld. In contrast, the cultural trail through Esselbach, Kredenbach and Steinmark is 6 km long. Comparing their lengths and geographical reach helps put a local route and a hiking trail with a regional section into perspective.
