The churches in Wohmbrechts, Maria-Thann and Itzlings each offer a distinct historical perspective, while the Degermoos nature reserve is a highlight of the local landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Hergatz, you can first decide whether the churches or the moorland should shape your itinerary. The wider region also offers seasonal activities around Lake Constance and in the nearby Alps.

Churches and Their History

In Wohmbrechts, St. George’s Parish Church is notable for its tower dating from the age of knights. In the centre of the village of Maria-Thann, the Baroque Parish and Pilgrimage Church of Our Lady stands on a hill. Pilgrimages to this church took place as early as the 16th century; the Marian pilgrimage site in Maria Thann dates back to a legend from the early 16th century.

A 2025 report notes that, as part of the deanery pilgrimage, numerous women and men had been making pilgrimages to the Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary in Maria Thann for 50 years. In Itzlings, the Marian pilgrimage church has a bell dating from 1436. The historical themes are therefore distinctly different: pilgrimage and legend in Maria Thann, a dated furnishing in Itzlings, and the tower in Wohmbrechts.

Degermoos and Seasonal Activities

The Degermoos nature reserve covers around 70.5 hectares. It comprises raised and transitional bog areas, moorland forests and adjacent species-rich meadows, and is located in the municipalities of Hergensweiler and Hergatz in the district of Lindau (Lake Constance). Its varied habitats make Degermoos a distinctive landscape attraction alongside the churches.

In the wider region, Lake Constance offers many opportunities for swimming in summer, while the nearby Alps invite visitors to go on hikes and mountain climbs in autumn. Meadows, moors and nearby Lake Constance also invite you to enjoy longer hikes and cycling tours.

The New Lighthouse in Lindau is 33 metres high and can be reached via 139 steps. Built in 1380, the Diebsturm on Lindau Island long marked the western end of the town’s fortifications. Both structures offer their own historical perspective: the lighthouse is described in terms of its height and steps, while the Diebsturm is notable for its former role in the fortifications.

The panoramic cycling route around Lake Constance in Lindau offers views of particularly beautiful spots along the lake and in higher-lying areas. The Plenterwaldweg runs from Kurhaus Scheidegg to just before the entrance to the Skywalk Allgäu treetop walk and shares information about selection forests at nine stations. The two routes have different focuses: the cycling route offers scenic views, while the stations explain the selection forest.

In the Eistobel nature reserve, the waters of the Obere Argen cascade down over several waterfalls along a 3-kilometre hiking trail.

The sculpture trail in Maierhöfen is an approximately 5-kilometre circular route with 17 sculptures and 12 text panels. Artists created the works at a symposium and left them to Maierhöfen for permanent exhibition. The trail adds an artistic focus to the historical buildings.
