In the parish church of St. George, stone plaques commemorate three years when Lake Constance froze over completely: 1573, 1830 and 1963. This glimpse into history is just one of the things that make Wasserburg (Lake Constance) an interesting place to visit: there is also art, access to the lake, an orchard and vineyard landscape, and activities on the water.

Art and history in Wasserburg

Kunstbahnhof Wasserburg offers a changing programme throughout the year. The parish church of St. George also tells a story of a long history: construction began before 784; it was probably initially a small wooden basilica with exposed roof beams. The stone plaques in the church preserve the memory of Lake Constance freezing over completely in 1573, 1830 and 1963. Until 1720, Wasserburg Castle was connected to the mainland by a drawbridge—a further historical link to the town’s location.

The Museum im Malhaus

The Museum im Malhaus is housed in a former courthouse built by the Fugger counts in 1595/97. Its permanent exhibitions focus on witches, fishing, Wolfram GeiĂźler and Martin Walser; there are also temporary exhibitions. In this way, long-running themes sit alongside a changing exhibition programme. If you are interested in a particular exhibition, check the current programme before your visit.

Lake, outdoor pool and activities on the water

Wasserburg offers free public access to the lake at Gamswiese and Malerwinkel. At Gamswiese, mature trees characterise the access point; at Malerwinkel, the view stretches across the peninsula and a nature reserve. The two locations thus offer different settings for a stay by the lake.

The Aquamarin outdoor pool is right on Lake Constance. Its heated outdoor pool offers panoramic views of the lake and mountains. As opening times can vary by season, check in advance whether the pool will be open during your trip. Another way to get out on the water is to join the Sundowner SUP tours on Lake Constance with Surfschule Wasserburg. Availability may vary, so check for current dates before making plans.

Antonius Chapel, orchards and vineyards

Antonius Chapel stands on the “Bergle” moraine hill and offers views across Lake Constance to the peaks of the Alps. Around the chapel, the landscape is shaped by old traditional orchards, modern low-stem fruit plantations and productive vineyards. In spring, the surroundings become a sea of white blossoms. The chapel opens only for special occasions; check the current opportunities to visit before you go.

Autumn also has its own connection to the landscape: visitors to Wasserburg can experience the apple and pear harvest, as well as ripe grapes being made into Lake Constance wines. These seasonal impressions differ from the spring blossoms and complement the cultural and lakeside attractions with the local fruit-growing and wine-making industries.

Regional perspective: Lindau

In the wider destination of Lindau, the Panorama cycle route follows the shores of Lake Constance and passes through the gently rolling surrounding countryside. The landscape along the route includes orchards, vineyards, picturesque villages and viewpoints. It offers a regional cycling perspective alongside Wasserburg’s cultural and natural attractions.
