Twelve stops make the Ergolding Archaeological Trail an engaging way to explore the past: words and images bring archaeological finds and the lives of our ancestors to life. The trail also covers nature in the Ergolding Isar floodplains, the Church of the Visitation of Mary and leisure activities at Ergomar. The attractions span history and architecture as well as nature discovery and exercise, with each offering its own focus.
Nature in the Ergolding Isar floodplains
The nature discovery and learning trail invites visitors to learn about local nature and the animals and plants found there. School groups are also a particularly important target audience. The trail explores habitats in the floodplain forest, the variety of plants in the nutrient-poor embankment areas, and birdlife along the Isar and at the Altheim reservoir. Its topics therefore range from plants and habitats to birdlife.
Exploration sheets are available for independent discovery tours. They can also be combined with guided activities offered by Bund Naturschutz. This provides different ways to engage with nature: independently using an exploration sheet or taking part in a guided activity.
Archaeological Trail: circular route with twelve stops
The Ergolding Archaeological Trail starts and ends at Ergolding Town Hall. The circular route passes twelve stops where archaeological finds and the lives of our ancestors are presented in words and images. The paved paths are easy to navigate by bicycle or with a stroller. This means the route can be planned as a walk or as a trip using either of these two modes of transport.
The trail combines its archaeological content with a clearly defined route: the start and finish are both at the town hall. Those particularly interested in archaeological finds and past ways of life will find a distinct focus here; visitors looking for nature-related topics can instead explore the learning trail in the Isar floodplains.
Church history and architecture
The Church of the Visitation of Mary is a Late Romanesque church dating from the 13th century. At the same time, it combines architectural elements from the Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Rococo periods. The juxtaposition of these periods makes the church a special destination for anyone interested in architectural history. Its three Rococo altars are also of particular artistic value.
Exercise and Ergomar
The Ergolding exercise trail is located at the “Hinter der Etz” recreation area next to Ergomar. It can be used independently, at any time, free of charge and without registration. This allows for flexible planning, with no need to register in advance. Another way to exercise is the barefoot path in Ergolding, which is designed according to TCM and divided into 24 tiles.
At Ergomar, an 78-metre-long adventure ride takes visitors through the darkness. In the outdoor area of Ergomar, the log cabin sauna alternates between fresh and warm air; it is considered a special sauna experience, particularly in the cold season. Alongside the trails and exercise course, there are also activities with a variety of different focuses.
Getting around and motorhome parking
Four level motorhome parking spaces are available at the Ergolding fairground, at the corner of FestplatzstraĂźe and SchinderstraĂźl. They are also suitable for vehicles over eight metres long. For motorhome travellers, the number of spaces, their location and surface, and the permitted vehicle length are important details to consider when planning.
A free Ergolding touring map with cycling and hiking trails is available at the town hall. It complements the information about the two trails and can help visitors choose cycling and hiking routes. Together with the Archaeological Trail’s start and finish at the town hall, it provides a practical starting point for finding your way around Ergolding.
