The Catholic parish church of St. James is a landmark in Tschirn and has shaped the village’s appearance since 1869. The statue of St. John of Nepomuk is another landmark, separate from the church. Together, the two offer visitors to the village two distinct cultural highlights.
Attractions in and around Tschirn
The FrankenwaldSteigla Dobertal-Weg starts in Tschirn. The Mariengrotte lies nearby along the route and is a good place for a short break. The well-preserved former EffeltermĂĽhle sawmill is also nearby and invites visitors to stop and take a look around. This gives you two different kinds of stops: a brief rest along the trail and a visit to a former sawmill.
Landscape in the wider Kronach destination
The wider Kronach destination encompasses two different landscapes. The larger northeastern part of the district of Kronach extends into the Franconian Forest, a low, rounded, densely wooded upland range with many valleys and elevations of around 500 to just over 700 metres. The rest of the district lies in the northern Upper Main Hills. It slopes down southwest from the Franconian Forest to around 300 to 500 metres and has a varied relief of escarpments and terraces. The wooded uplands and stepped hill country thus provide two distinct regional landscapes.
Culture in the wider Kronach destination
In the town of Kronach, Rosenberg Fortress brings together medieval, Renaissance and Baroque military architecture. The oldest surviving document mentioning the name Rosenberg dates from 1249. The Franconian Gallery presents 220 outstanding masterpieces of painting and sculpture from the Late Gothic and Renaissance periods in Franconia, across 1,000 square metres. In GehĂĽlz, the Heunischenburg is considered one of the oldest stone fortresses in Europe north of the Alps and one of the finest defensive structures of the late Bronze Age in Central Europe.
Another historic destination in the wider Kronach area is Mitwitz Water Castle. Its origins date back to the mid-13th century; the Renaissance building in its present form was created through alterations and additions between 1596 and 1598. Guided tours also give visitors a glimpse of the private rooms of the castle’s last residents. As tour availability may vary, check the current options in advance.
Hiking and getting around in the Kronach destination
Two FrankenwaldSteigla trails in the wider Kronach destination differ in length and difficulty: “Entlang der Marter” in Kronach is 14.7 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty; the “Ködeltour” in Steinwiesen is 17.1 kilometres long and rated very difficult. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Another way to get active is the 14-kilometre circular route around the Mauthaus drinking water reservoir. It is suitable for skating, cycling, roller skiing, roller skating and running; check the surface conditions and any restrictions in advance.
The Rodachtalbahn runs from Steinwiesen to Nordhalben with a historic locomotive and carriages. If you plan to take the train, check the operating days in advance.
