Views and Forest in the Franconian Forest
The municipality of Steinwiesen is 80 percent forested and has many developed hiking and cycling trails. The Birnbaum Water and Observation Tower adds a distinctive landmark: it stands on a treeless ridge near Birnbaum, a district of Steinwiesen. The tower is 32 metres high and sits at an elevation of 610 metres. From its viewing platform, the panoramic view extends across the heights of the Franconian Forest, the Thuringian Forest and the Fichtel Mountains; on a clear day, you can see as far as the Main Valley. The open ridge forms a striking contrast with the wooded surroundings. Check the tower’s seasonal access conditions before visiting.
Hiking Trails, a Circular Route and the Railway
Steinwiesen has numerous award-winning hiking trails that are scenic and challenging. Another option for an outing is the Ködeltalsperre, a destination in the area around Steinwiesen. Its circular route is paved throughout and is suitable for cycling and skating, as well as for wheelchair users and pushchairs. The options therefore differ in character: the hiking trails are described as scenic and challenging, while the route around the reservoir is distinguished by its paved surface and the specific uses mentioned.
Between Steinwiesen and Nordhalben, the Rodachtal Railway offers a distinctive experience, with a historic locomotive and carriages. Swimming Facilities and Sauna
Steinwiesen outdoor pool has a sunbathing lawn, a kiosk and a beach volleyball court. During the summer months, a heated swimming pool and a non-swimmer pool are available. The pools make the outdoor pool a seasonal option; if swimming is important for your stay, check the current conditions and availability with the operator.
Steinwiesen leisure pool has an indoor herbal sauna. Outdoors, there is a Finnish log cabin sauna with a relaxation room, a barrel sauna, a sauna cube and a bio sauna. Check with the operator before your visit to find out which facilities are currently available.
A Planned Project on the Rodach
Construction work on the adventure trail along the Rodach in Steinwiesen officially began on 25 August 2026; the overall project is scheduled for completion in mid-2027. Treat the adventure trail as a planned project, not as a visitor destination that has already been completed.
