Discover Bachhagel through two local highlights: the building history of St. George’s Chapel and the trails and waters of the Zwergbach. At the chapel, a Late Gothic choir, structural elements dating from 1692, a Stations of the Cross, and a panoramic lounger come together. The relaxation station on the Zwergbach is right on a themed hiking trail and a cycling route; on hot summer days, the water invites you to enjoy Kneipp treatments and splash around. Nearby, the observation tower at Dattenhauser Ried offers a view across an extensive moorland and wetland landscape.

St. George’s Chapel: Building History and Views

The Catholic Chapel of St. George was once the parish and pilgrimage church of Lobershofen. Lobershofen was destroyed in 1462 during the Imperial War. The choir dates from the Late Gothic period, probably from the second half of the 15th century. The nave, with its curved west gable and three-storey square roof turret, dates from 1692. There are roughly two centuries between the probable date of the choir and the construction year of 1692, making the chapel’s multi-phase building history tangible.

The chapel’s current high-relief terracotta panels were modelled by Günzburg sculptor Josef Brenner. The panoramic lounger is located at the top of the Stations of the Cross. From there, the view stretches far across Bachhagel and the surrounding area. The reliefs add a distinctive artistic touch, while the lounger offers views across the village and its surroundings.

Hiking Trails and Summer by the Zwergbach

The relaxation station on the Zwergbach is right on the “Sinne-Reich” themed hiking trail and the “Donautal und Alb” cycling route. This gives the station a specific connection to both routes: one is designated as a themed hiking trail, the other as a cycling route.

On hot summer days, the Zwergbach is several metres wide at this point and invites you to enjoy Kneipp treatments and splash around in the cool water. Water conditions can vary, so check on site whether they suit your plans. Parking is available right on site at the barefoot path on the Zwergbach.

Views of Dattenhauser Ried

The observation tower lies near Bachhagel, on the southwestern edge of Dattenhauser Ried. From there, the view stretches across the largest moorland and wetland area in the entire Swabian Alb. This viewpoint offers a different perspective from the panoramic lounger at St. George’s: at the chapel, you can see far across Bachhagel and the surrounding area; at the Ried, the view focuses on the moorland and wetland landscape.

In the broader destination of Dillingen An Der Donau

In the broader destination of Dillingen An Der Donau, the DonAUwald hiking trail runs for just under 60 kilometres through the floodplain forests along the Danube; 40 kilometres of it lie in the district of Dillingen. It is Bavarian Swabia’s first premium hiking trail. All five classic stages can be reached conveniently by train, making the trip climate-neutral. Before travelling, it is worth checking the current connections for your chosen stage.

The Donautal-Radelspaß is also part of this regional context: it takes place every two years over a weekend in September, with the central event held in the district of Dillingen. Three signposted routes, closed to cars, take visitors on culinary and cultural tours. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the dates for the relevant year.
