Visitors exploring Höchstädt on the Danube can choose between interactive trails, castle culture and local topics. The Wasser-Wisser Path combines digital learning with quizzes and puzzles along the stream; the Duchess Anna Circular Trail features a wooden boardwalk, a small suspension bridge and information points. The castle also offers exhibitions, events and guided tours. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests, balancing outdoor activities, history and culture.

Wasser-Wisser Path and Duchess Anna Circular Trail

The Wasser-Wisser Path is an adventure trail that offers digital, interactive learning about water. It starts in the town park opposite the Kneipp facility. Along the Pulverbach and Klosterbach streams, you can use QR codes at nine stops to access quizzes and puzzles. The route is 1.7 kilometres long; the stated walking time is about 30 minutes, not including time spent solving the tasks. If you want to try the activities at each stop, allow extra time for the puzzles.

The Duchess Anna Circular Trail has a different focus: a wooden boardwalk and a small suspension bridge are among its defining features. Information points cover Höchstädt’s history, the region and its people, as well as local flora and fauna. Unlike the Wasser-Wisser Path, which offers digital, interactive learning about water, this trail focuses on local history and nature alongside its distinctive path features. The trails therefore differ mainly in their topics and how they present information.

Höchstädt Castle: Renaissance and Exhibitions

Höchstädt Castle is a Renaissance castle commissioned by Count Palatine Philipp Ludwig of Palatinate-Neuburg from 1589 onwards. Today, it houses the permanent exhibition “Europe’s Hotspot 1704,” the German Faience Museum, temporary exhibitions by the Swabian District and various events. The historic castle building thus brings together a range of exhibitions and events.

The exhibitions feature interactive stations where visitors of all ages can explore and try things out independently. When visiting the castle, bear in mind that opening times vary by season; check the current opening hours in advance. Regular family tours and a holiday programme are also available. If you plan to take part in one of these activities, confirm the latest dates directly with the castle.

From October to March, the Höchstädt Historical Society organises free tours of the castle chapel; tours can also be arranged by appointment. Confirm a specific date with the society in advance. This gives you the option of planning a chapel visit alongside the castle’s regular guided tours.

Church and Guided Tour

The Church of the Holy Spirit at the hospital is a hall church with a gabled tower topped by an onion dome. It was built around 1590 by master builder Leonhard Grieneisen of Burglengenfeld, who was involved in the castle’s construction at the time. This links the building histories of the church and the castle, while the church’s architectural form offers a distinct topic in its own right.

You can also explore Höchstädt itself on a guided tour. Check locally for current dates and booking details before making plans. The tour is another way to discover the town, alongside the topics explored on the trails and at the castle.

Friday Market in the Market Square

Every Friday, Höchstädt’s market square hosts stalls selling handmade products such as cheese, honey and jams. For travellers interested in these products, the market provides a clear weekly schedule to plan around: visit on a Friday if you would like to browse what’s on offer.
