The local history museum of the town of Wertingen displays finds from the Wertingen area dating back to the Neolithic period, alongside the town’s history, crafts and guilds. For a stay with a cultural focus, there are also other perspectives to explore: contemporary art available to borrow, the history of technology and the Donauried Sculpture Trail. The subjects therefore differ not only by period, but also according to whether you would like to focus on collections, works of art or an outdoor trail.

Town history in the castle

Examples of crafts and guilds include a 17th-century loom and fabric-printing blocks. The local history museum also displays farming equipment from several centuries. Archaeological finds, craft objects and evidence of agricultural work thus offer different perspectives on local history. The museum collections are housed in the basement and corridors of Wertingen Castle, a castle complex dating from the 14th to the 17th century. The collections are therefore housed in a historic building, connecting the site with themes from different periods.

Art, technology and your own research

The Wertingen Telephone Museum displays 168 exhibits on the history of the telephone, including a manual switchboard, teleprinters and Morse apparatus; the number may change over time. Alongside crafts and agricultural work, this offers a distinct perspective on the history of technology. The art library focuses on contemporary art: visitors can borrow original works of art, original prints and small sculptures for three months. This offers a different way of engaging with art than viewing a collection, as the works can be borrowed for use. The Wertingen Municipal Archive enables research into the town’s history, including its districts and the places in the former district of Wertingen. It is open to interested visitors conducting research into local and family history; please arrange your visit with the archive in advance.

An outdoor trail and visits by appointment

The Donauried Sculpture Trail is well worth visiting at any time of year. It offers a different focus from museum collections: the trail itself, rather than individual exhibits, is at the centre. Visits to the Wertingen Beer Museum can be arranged in advance. If requested, a brewery tour with beer tasting can be added for a contribution towards costs of 2.50 euros. Check the details of visits and tours before setting out.

Hiking and events in the Dillingen An Der Donau destination

In the Dillingen An Der Donau destination, the DonAUwald hiking trail runs for just under 60 kilometres through the floodplain forests along the Danube; 40 kilometres of it are in the district of Dillingen. It is Bavarian Swabia’s first premium hiking trail. All five classic stages can be conveniently reached by train, making travel climate-neutral; check current connections when planning your trip. The Donautal Radelspaß is also part of this regional offering: it takes place every two years on a weekend in September, with the central event held in the district of Dillingen. Three signposted routes, closed to cars, lead visitors on culinary and cultural outings. Check the event dates before including the Radelspaß in your travel plans.
