Bischofsgrün in the Fichtelgebirge is the only health resort with a healing climate in northern Bavaria. When choosing your stay, the town offers several distinct highlights: interconnected cross-country ski trails and winter hiking paths, signposted hiking options, a panoramic trail and opportunities for cycling. You can plan your trip around whether you would like to focus on winter trails, a particular hiking route or cycling. Rose Monday also brings a cultural event in the town center into focus.
Winter Trails, Ski Slope and Ochsenkopf
The Bischofsgrün winter sports center includes a network of cross-country ski trails and winter hiking paths that are interconnected. The North cable car is a double chairlift with a plastic bubble and takes you from Bischofsgrün to the summit of the Ochsenkopf. At the North cable car, winter sports enthusiasts can use a 2,300-meter-long, technically snowmaking-equipped slope, described as the longest in northern Bavaria.
Hiking: Short Route and Panorama
There are hundreds of kilometers of signposted hiking trails around Bischofsgrün, with full-day and half-day hikes. The Fairy-Tale Hiking Trail is a clearly defined destination for a shorter hike: it starts at the town hall, is signposted from there, is about two kilometers long and features 14 signs depicting fairy-tale characters. From the town center, it passes streams, rocks and fountains before climbing to Hügelfelsen; it is also entertaining for small children. The Bischofsgrün Panorama Trail offers a different focus: it forms a loop around Bischofsgrün and provides panoramic views of the town from various vantage points. The Fairy-Tale Trail combines its character signs with a route to Hügelfelsen; the Panorama Trail focuses on the loop and views of the town. There is also a clear difference in how much time to allow: the Fairy-Tale Trail is about two kilometers long, while the hiking options around Bischofsgrün include half-day and full-day hikes.
Cycling in Bischofsgrün
The varied terrain in Bischofsgrün offers a wide range of options for cycling and mountain biking. Bischofsgrün is also the starting point for the Euregio Süd cycling tour and a hub for several long-distance cycle routes. This offers two distinct perspectives: the terrain is relevant when choosing a local cycling activity, while the starting point and hub describe the town’s role in the wider cycling network. Before setting out on a specific tour, it is advisable to check the latest route conditions.
An Event in the Town Center
The traditional Snowman Festival takes place on Rose Monday in the center of Bischofsgrün. If you are still deciding when to visit, the festival offers a cultural point of interest in its own right. You can consider it as a specific occasion alongside hiking or cycling plans.
