Warmensteinach lies on the southern slope of the 1,024-metre-high Ochsenkopf in the Fichtelgebirge. There are several ways to shape a stay here: explore marked hiking trails, learn about glass bead craftsmanship and architectural history, or attend events held at different times of year. You can plan your trip around whether hiking, a cultural theme or a specific date is your main focus.

Hiking at the Ochsenkopf and near Grassemann

Warmensteinach has more than 100 km of marked hiking trails. These include family routes, the wellness hiking trail around the Ochsenkopf, the Jägersteig trail and guided hikes in the area. If you prefer to hike independently, you can follow the marked trails; guided hikes are available for those who want to go with a guide. Trail conditions and availability can vary by season. Check them before setting out, especially if a particular trail is essential to your plans.

A separate highlight is the trail in the outdoor area of the information centre: its 17 stations explore cultural landscape features and the history of the Grassemann clearing. It can also be visited when the building is closed. These two figures describe different options: more than 100 km refers to the marked trail network, while the 17 stations are on a single trail focused on local cultural history.

Crafts and architectural history

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Warmensteinach was consecrated on 30 August 1705. Its wrought-iron gate invites visitors to descend ten steps to the main entrance. The Schwärzer House in Grassemann was built in 1698 as a log building. The historic building and the information exhibition in the barn at Grassemann No. 3 offer different points of interest: the exhibition introduces the history of forest use. Check directly before visiting to find out whether the exhibition is open.

At Zindulka’s workshop, children and adults can watch how hand-wound glass beads are made and try making them themselves. This adds a hands-on craft experience, combining observation and participation, to the historic buildings and exhibition. Check the participation requirements in advance before planning a workshop visit.

Events throughout the year

Recurring events include the Easter Market on Palm Sunday and the Oven Festival with Farmers’ Market in September, both at the Grassemann open-air museum. A motorcycle weekend takes place in Warmensteinach over the Ascension Day weekend. In August, the Bayreuth Festival of Young Artists visits Warmensteinach with “International Music.” The Warmensteinach Christmas Market follows on the second weekend of December.

The dates span Palm Sunday and the Ascension Day weekend, as well as August, September and the second weekend of December. This gives you several possible travel windows rather than limiting your plans to a single season. If an event is the deciding factor for your trip, check that year’s programme in advance. Whatever the season, it is worth checking trail conditions before hiking.

Warmensteinach offers several reasons to visit: an extensive network of marked hiking trails, a trail with stations exploring the cultural landscape and history of Grassemann, as well as crafts, architectural history and seasonal events. When planning your trip, consider which of these interests you most and whether a specific event date is important. This way, you can choose travel dates that suit your interests while also taking the conditions on your planned trails into account.
