Pegnitz’s Historic Town Hall stands in the middle of the long, linear street market and was built around 1347. Together with its churches, milling history and karst landscape, it offers different ways to explore the town. When planning your trip, you can connect these themes with specific starting points for walks and scenic viewpoints.
Town Hall, Churches and Historic Building Dates
Today’s St. Bartholomew’s Church in Pegnitz was consecrated in 1900 and is the third church building on this site. St. Mary’s Church was built in 1927 for a diaspora congregation that had grown to around 600 Catholics. Around 1939, it acquired its present appearance with the Baroque furnishings from Dornbach Church. The two churches thus reflect different historical developments: the succession of church buildings on one site and the later furnishing of a congregation’s church.
The history of Zaußen Mill also includes several clearly dated milestones. Hans Zauß built it around 1450; in 1710, after decades in ruins, Hans Dennerlein rebuilt it. A rock monument was erected at the accident site on Fischelhöhe in 1973. A plaque lists the names of all the soldiers who lost their lives.
Altenstadt Castle was extensively renovated and remodeled and is used for municipal concerts and events. Pegnitz’s summer concerts are also part of the events programme. If a concert is the reason for your trip, check the date in advance.
Walks with Different Starting Points
The town walk in Pegnitz starts and ends at the Old Town Hall at HauptstraĂźe 45. It is approximately 3.5 or 5.7 kilometres long. The Leo-Jobst Trail, by contrast, starts and ends at the Pegnitz spring behind ZauĂźen Mill. The different starting points can help you plan: first decide whether you want your walk to start at the town hall or at the spring.
You can also take the approximate distance into account when choosing between the two stated lengths for the town walk. The WaldTIERlehrpfad nature trail is not suitable for pushchairs; bear this restriction in mind when choosing activities for your trip.
Karst Landscape and Viewpoints
At 544 metres, Castle Hill is a landmark of Pegnitz. The tower can be reached by climbing 97 steps and offers panoramic views over Pegnitz and the surrounding area. Kleiner Kulm is 626 metres high and one of the highest elevations in Franconian Switzerland. From there, views extend across the Franconian Forest, the Fichtel Mountains and Franconian Switzerland. These offer two distinct options: a town landmark with a view, and a higher viewpoint overlooking three named landscapes.
Karst is another defining feature of the landscape. At the “Karstwunder” (Karst Wonder) on Wasserberg, the Mühlbach loses some of its water on the north slope through limestone fissures and a ponor cave. The Pegnitz rises from a typical karst spring behind the former Zaußen Mill. The spring is also the starting and ending point of the Leo-Jobst Trail; the geological description at Wasserberg adds the Mühlbach’s underground water loss to this theme.
Within the Broader Bayreuth Destination
Within the broader Bayreuth destination, the landscape extends beyond Pegnitz into the district. Franconian Switzerland, with its varied and gentle scenery, defines the district’s western and southern parts. In the north, the Fichtel Mountains shape the landscape with dark forests and granite boulder fields. The Bayreuth district also has a well-maintained network of around 1,400 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, hiking paths and cycle routes. These details relate to the district and provide a regional context for Pegnitz’s specific places and routes.
Leisure Bus and Finding Accommodation
Since June 2021, Pegnitz has been served by the regional Schlösserlinie leisure bus route. It runs between Bayreuth, Pegnitz, Pottenstein, Gößweinstein, Waischenfeld, Hollfeld and Kulmbach. If you plan to travel by bus, check the timetable for the specific day.
When looking for a hotel in Pegnitz, let your interests guide your trip planning—for example, architectural history, walks or the karst landscape. For a specific concert date or a journey on the Schlösserlinie, check the latest relevant information.
