Walsdorf combines a historic town center with trails for walking and cycling. When choosing what to focus on, two sides stand side by side: half-timbered houses, the church, and Jewish history on the one hand, circular trails and experience paths on the other. This means a stay can bring together culture and outdoor activity without turning them into a single fixed program. The local offerings clearly differ in their focus: some explore history through places and information boards, while others center on exercise stations or a route for hiking and cycling.
Local History and Jewish Heritage
Half-timbered houses shape the appearance of Walsdorf’s town center. The Baroque Protestant St. Laurentius Church is located there. The historic trail “Walsdorf Through the Flow of Time” passes selected sites to explore the town’s history; information boards provide background and stories from past centuries.
Jewish history in Walsdorf features prominently along the historic trail. Sites include the Jewish cemetery, the former synagogue, and the Jewish memorial. The trail leads from the cemetery of the Walsdorf community through the historic town center, past information boards and display cases, to the Jewish cemetery. The starting and ending points are different cemeteries; the route connects the town center with an important site in Jewish history.
The Jewish cemetery lies on the outskirts of Walsdorf, in the direction of Steinsdorf. It covers about 7,000 square meters; 1,084 graves can be located there. By the number of burials, it is the largest Jewish cemetery in the Bamberg district. The trail, memorial sites, and cemetery thus offer several ways to explore the town’s Jewish history.
Circular Trails with Different Focuses
The fitness trail is laid out as a 3.3-kilometer circular route with 18 exercise stations. The start and finish are at the parking lot of the SV Walsdorf 1950 e.V. sports center. This sets it apart from the historic trail: here, the focus is on exercise stations, while “Walsdorf Through the Flow of Time” presents historical background at selected places and on information boards. To plan your visit, you can first decide whether the exercise circuit or the themed history trail better suits your stay.
The adventure trail along the aurochs area between Walsdorf and Kolmsdorf invites visitors to hike and cycle. Its stations in the Aurach Valley share knowledge, invite visitors to play, and offer a place to rest. The two routes differ in their stated focus: exercise on the fitness trail, and learning, play, and rest at the adventure trail stations. This can help you choose between an exercise circuit and a route with different types of stations.
Cycling and walking tours are possible around Walsdorf. Cycling and hiking trails also lead from Bamberg’s city center into the Aurach Valley and onward to the Main Valley. This gives you the choice between local tours and a regional route corridor. You can focus on tours around Walsdorf or also consider the corridor from Bamberg through the Aurach Valley to the Main Valley.
Another Option at BrĂĽnnla
A Kneipp facility was built at BrĂĽnnla in 2023 for visitors and residents. It adds another option beyond the routes. If you plan to visit the facility, check in advance whether it is currently open for use.
