From a late Gothic sacrament house to the Baroque parish church: Pettstadt brings together different periods of ecclesiastical art. Wayside shrines and a statue add to the town’s history, while recurring festivals offer seasonal pointers for planning your trip. This lets you decide in advance whether to focus on architectural history, religious art in the townscape or a particular festival date.

Church Art Across the Centuries

The Pettstadt parish was established in 1399 and placed under the authority of the Bamberg Cathedral Chapter, which held the right of patronage. The present-day Baroque parish church of the Nativity of Mary represents a later phase of construction: work began in 1754, the building was completed in 1756, and it was consecrated on August 17, 1777. There are 21 years between completion and consecration—two distinct milestones in the building’s history.

The high altar was created in 1769 by Johann Bernhard Kamm as a free-standing architectural structure, placing it between the church’s completion and consecration. Frescoes from that period’s stylistic era survive in the tower chapel: they depict Christ in a mandorla, Mary, John the Baptist and other saints. Another historical detail is the late Gothic sacrament house, dating from 1494 and bearing the coats of arms of two members of the Bamberg Cathedral Chapter.

Wayside Shrines and Historical Traces in the Townscape

The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, patron saint of Bohemia, stands immediately in front of the Ebrach Bridge. It was erected on May 16, 1872. In the front garden of the Kraus property at Kaulberg 2, a sandstone sculpture depicts Jesus resting beside the cross.

The Baroque niche wayside shrine Lieb Herrchela dates from 1727. Framed by two linden trees, it stands on the old connecting path to Erlach, near the cemetery. The Franzosenmarter shrine is near the bridge over the Rauhe Ebrach; it was probably built in the early 16th century. The Unteres Kreuz stands in the forest on the Mainberg, at a fork in the path where Erlacher StraĂźe ends.

The history of Pettstadt’s ferry rights has also been preserved: their holders can be traced by name back to 1461. This historical record therefore predates the construction of the present-day parish church. It adds another dimension to the town’s ecclesiastical and artistic history.

Festivals as Seasonal Pointers

The festival calendar offers recurring pointers when choosing when to travel. The Pettstadt Rose Festival takes place on the fourth weekend in June, and the street festival on the third weekend in July. The Christmas market is scheduled for the third weekend of Advent. These dates therefore mark summer and pre-Christmas travel periods. Since the exact calendar dates vary from year to year, check the dates for your travel year before making plans.

More Culture and Nature in the Broader Bamberg Destination

The broader Bamberg destination encompasses other distinct cultural and natural attractions. Weissenstein Palace near Pommersfelden is one of Germany’s great Baroque complexes and houses an extensive gallery of art-historically significant works by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters.

In the 18th century, the Ebrach Abbey complex was extensively transformed by Leonhard Dientzenhofer into a palace-like Baroque ensemble; the Gothic church with its rose window was preserved. Since 2004, the former Cistercian monastery has housed the Museum of the History of Ebrach, which explores the history of the market town and the monastery.
