At the end of the canoe trail on the Main, Kemmern has its own landing point. Together with the restored Main floodplains, it is a distinctive landmark in the river landscape; cycling and hiking trails, along with the history of Semberg, add further points of interest.

Kemmern between the Main and the countryside

Kemmern was first mentioned in a document in 1017 and lies directly on the Main, at the foot of the Haßberge hills. The valley is shaped by the Steigerwald to the southwest and Franconian Switzerland to the east. The cultural landscape also includes wooded hills in the surrounding low mountain ranges. The river and valley give the area distinct landscape features that you can distinguish as you look around Kemmern.

Main floodplains and canoe trail

The restored Main floodplains are well worth seeing. They offer a distinct perspective on the landscape alongside the river itself. If you follow the canoe trail on the Main, you will find the landing point at the end of the route in Kemmern. This provides a specific endpoint for planning your stages; the floodplains also form a separate focal point for appreciating the landscape.

An overview of cycling and hiking trails

Various cycling and hiking trails pass through the countryside and villages, allowing you to explore Kemmern and its surroundings on foot or by bicycle. Two specific directions are given for cycling routes: the MainRadweg leads from Kemmern along the Main towards Hallstadt. The cycling route from Kemmern to Breitengüßbach is part of both the MainRadweg and the Burgenstraße cycling route. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

For Nordic walking, the Maintal-Haßberge center has 15 continuously signposted routes. They are between 4 and 15 kilometers long and have varying levels of difficulty. Information boards are located at the starting points in Oberhaid, Kemmern, Lauter, Baunach, and Priegendorf. The range of distances and difficulty levels gives you specific points of comparison when choosing a route. As signs or conditions may change, it is a good idea to check them before your outing.

Traces on Semberg

The name “Helenenkapelle” (Helena Capellen) appears around 1600. Traces in the area around Helen's Chapel on Semberg point to ritual use as far back as the Celtic period. There is also a section of fortification there, probably dating to prehistoric or early historic times. To the east, it encloses a steep 40-meter drop to the Main Valley. Thus, a name recorded around 1600 and much older, cautiously interpreted evidence can be found side by side.

Cultural attractions in the wider Bamberg travel destination

In the wider Bamberg travel destination, other places complement Kemmern’s local highlights with their own architectural and museum attractions. Weissenstein Palace near Pommersfelden is one of Germany’s major Baroque complexes and houses an extensive gallery of art-historically significant works by French, Italian, German, and Dutch painters.

In the 18th century, the Ebrach monastery complex was extensively transformed by Leonhard Dientzenhofer into a palace-like Baroque ensemble. Its Gothic church, with its rose window, was preserved. In 2004, the Museum of the History of Ebrach was established in the former Cistercian monastery; it explores the history of the market town and the monastery. These regional cultural attractions differ from Kemmern’s river landscape, trails, and historic features on Semberg.
