An easy cycling loop along the Isar and Jachen, together with a local history museum and cultural trail: Lenggries combines outdoor activity with clearly defined topics relating to local and regional history. When planning, you can consider whether you mainly want to ride the loop, explore the culture, or include a destination in the surrounding area as well.

Cycling along the Isar and Jachen

The easy circular cycling route from Lenggries via Wegscheid to Leger is 13 kilometres long and takes about an hour. It starts and ends at the Isar Bridge in Lenggries. The route follows the Isar and Jachen through idyllic river meadows. Take your own pace and breaks into account when planning. As route conditions and access may change, check them before setting out.

Nearby, about 15 kilometres south of Lenggries, lies Sylvensteinsee. The crystal-clear lake is an inviting place to swim and relax, makes a suitable starting point for a hike, and is close to the Isar Cycle Route. The lake is a separate planning consideration south of Lenggries.

Museum, cultural trail and history

The Lenggries Local History Museum presents cultural and historical treasures from the Isarwinkel in seven exhibition areas. The museum trail takes visitors from customs and crafts to farming and alpine agriculture, as well as the history of timber rafting. Lenggries is known for timber rafting, both past and present.

The municipality of Lenggries’ Artists’ and Cultural Trail offers a different focus. It comprises 22 stations with steles dedicated to artists and cultural figures from the municipality. The museum and cultural trail therefore differ in format: at the local history museum, the topics are spread across seven exhibition areas, while the cultural trail brings together stations devoted to people involved in local art and culture. If you want to include culture in your travel plans, you can consider these two offerings separately, depending on your interests.

Hohenburg is part of the historical record; it was once the region’s most important seat of power. The castle was destroyed in a devastating major fire on 21 July 1707.

Cross-country skiing and getting there

There are 42 kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails in the Lenggries area. In addition, a 1.5-kilometre floodlit night trail runs north of the Brauneck mountain station as far as the Gilgenhöfe farms. With its own route and length, the night trail is a separate option. As trail details and grooming conditions may change, check the latest conditions before planning.

Lenggries can be reached from Munich by BRB train. Check the current timetable before departure. When looking for hotels in Lenggries, you can first decide whether your trip will mainly include the cycling loop and cultural attractions in town, or whether you also want to visit Sylvensteinsee nearby. Then choose the location of your accommodation based on the specific destinations you plan to visit.
