In Dietenhofen, model making and technical exhibits meet historical exhibitions, sacred art and opportunities for outdoor activities. The Herpa Museum World of Motion, the local history museum and the altar in St. Andreas provide cultural highlights; an indoor swimming pool, suggested hiking routes and a rest stop on the European Cycle Route add opportunities to get active. This makes it easy to choose between cultural and activity-focused options when planning your trip.
Museums and Sacred Art
The Herpa Museum World of Motion in Dietenhofen displays numerous exhibits from the Cars & Trucks and Wings ranges, as well as technical displays and changing special exhibitions. It offers extensive insights into Herpa’s history and a behind-the-scenes look at what is probably the world’s largest model car manufacturer. Unlike this presentation focused on Herpa, the changing special exhibitions at the local history museum explore themes from the past.
A specific stop for art history is St. Andreas Church in Dietenhofen. It houses a Late Gothic winged altar dating from 1510. Its narrative scenes depict episodes from the lives of Saint Kunigunde and Saint Bridget of Sweden. Visits are possible by prior telephone arrangement.
Activities, Routes and Castle Remains
Dietenhofen indoor swimming pool opened in 1972 and is suitable for the whole family. Four hiking routes are also suggested for Dietenhofen. Check the conditions on your chosen route before setting out. The Boulodrome is located directly on the European Cycle Route and offers hikers and cyclists a place to rest. Alongside the suggested hikes, there is therefore a specific rest stop on the cycle route and the indoor pool to choose from as different activity options.
At the southwestern edge of Leonrod, west of Dietenhofen, stand the remains of the walls of the former moated castle. The castle was built in the 13th century and burned down in 1651; the ruins are privately owned.
More to Explore in the Wider Ansbach Destination
The wider Ansbach destination includes other distinct cultural and nature-focused attractions. The Franconian Literature Trail in Wolframs-Eschenbach is a 2.2-kilometre accessible circular route around the town fortifications. Fifteen information boards introduce authors from the Middle Ages to the present day whose works explore Franconia. The circular route and boards combine a specific trail with literary history.
The “wiegen & messen” Museum in Königshofen displays more than 4,000 exhibits. These include historical scales, associated weights, cubits, folding rulers and vessels for measuring grain. With these measuring and weighing objects, the collection has a different focus from the model-making and technology themes in Dietenhofen.
The Frankenhöhe Nature Park is also part of the wider Ansbach destination. It covers about 1,100 km² and lies within the districts of Ansbach and Neustadt a.d. Aisch–Bad Windsheim, as well as the independent city of Ansbach. The nature park provides information on hiking and cycling routes as well as ranger tours, and is the source area of the Altmühl, the Fränkische Rezat and the Zenn.
