Haiming brings together two clearly distinct interests: architectural and local history, and cycling routes that pass through the area. This makes it easy to decide early on whether to focus on Haiming itself or on a longer bike ride during your stay. The historic sites range from a 19th-century castle to a pilgrimage church with a much older building history.

Castle, Chapel and Church History

Count Sigmund von Berchem, the lord of the manor at the time, had the new Haiming Castle built above the castle pond between 1838 and 1840. Its construction provides a clear historical reference point for Haiming. Alongside this 19th-century building are two religious landmarks with their own dates: the consecration of the Antonius Chapel and the building history of the pilgrimage church in Niedergottsau.

The Antonius Chapel was consecrated to Saint Anthony of Padua on June 13, 1902. In Niedergottsau, part of the municipality of Haiming, the pilgrimage church of the Assumption of Mary was built as early as 1443 and substantially expanded and remodeled in 1760. The dates make the differences between these historic sites tangible: the early church construction was followed by a major alteration, while the castle construction and chapel consecration were later, separate milestones. Those interested in local history can thus consider the building patronage, consecration and remodeling as distinct aspects.

The Niedergern History Trail offers another way to explore the past. Signs on public and private buildings in Haiming tell visitors about old house names and the history of the respective farms or houses. The focus is therefore not only on individual religious and castle buildings, but also on the names and stories associated with the farms and houses. This is a distinct theme within the area.

Cycling Routes with Different Connections to the Area

Two routes that pass through Haiming or Niedergottsau are mentioned for cyclists. The Inn-Salzach Cycle Route passes through Haiming. The Three Lakes Tour runs through Niedergottsau and Haiming. The routes therefore have different connections to the area: Haiming is named as a passage point on one route, while both places are included in the described route of the other. If cycling is the focus of your stay, you can use this information as a starting point for choosing a route that suits your planned itinerary.

The routes should not be treated as interchangeable simply because Haiming is mentioned for both. The Three Lakes Tour explicitly also includes Niedergottsau, while the Inn-Salzach Cycle Route is noted as passing through Haiming.

Altötting as the Regional Setting

In the wider travel destination of Altötting, the Altötting district lies between the Inn and Salzach rivers. The landscape is characterized by a plain about ten kilometers wide, through which the Inn flows and which is bordered to the north and south by green hills. Together with the Mühldorf district, the Altötting district forms the Inn-Salzach tourism region. Topics covered in its visitor information include cycling and pilgrimage routes, museums and bathing lakes. This regional perspective complements Haiming’s local history with the landscape and other potential interests across the district.

The natural setting of the wider travel destination of Altötting is also clearly defined: the internationally significant wetland and nature reserve “Lower Inn between Haiming and Neuhaus” provides a habitat for migrating, overwintering and breeding marsh and water birds. More than 25 different bird species associated with aquatic and wetland habitats breed there. The information about the landscape, tourism region and wetland refers to Altötting as the wider travel destination and should be distinguished from Haiming’s local buildings and history-related attractions.
