Marktl combines four cycling routes with an orchard meadow and a local history shaped by specific dates and memorials. When planning your stay, it makes sense to first choose your main focus: a cycling stage, nature, or the history surrounding the baptismal font and papal memorials. Marktl offers a range of topics to help you shape your stay.
Cycling Routes and Nature in Marktl
Marktl is a junction for the Inn Cycle Path, the Benedikt Cycle Path, the Traun-Alz Cycle Path and the Inn-Salzach Cycle Path. These four named routes make cycling a practical consideration when planning a trip. If you have a particular stage in mind, it is worth checking the current route and conditions before setting out.
The natural surroundings also vary. The Dachlwand am Inn nature reserve covers parts of the municipalities of Marktl, Erlbach and Perach and spans about 206 hectares. In 1986, it was converted from a landscape conservation area into a nature reserve. The beekeeping education trail in Marktl passes through an orchard meadow with more than 20 old varieties of apple and pear. This brings together a protected area spanning several municipalities and an educational trail devoted to heritage fruit varieties.
Baptismal Font and Memorials
The baptismal font in St. Oswald’s Church has a clearly documented history: Josef Ratzinger was baptized in it on April 16, 1927. It had to be removed from the church in 1965 because of renovation work. Since Easter Sunday 2006, it has once again served its original purpose as a baptismal font in St. Oswald’s Church. Its history thus links a personal biographical event with the later alteration and renewed use of a particular object.
The Benedict Column is another point of reference in time. It was erected on the occasion of the papal visit on September 11, 2006, and designed by sculptor Joseph Michael Neustifter of Eggenfelden. At the town hall, a bronze commemorative plaque bearing important historical dates marks the tenth anniversary of Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Marktl.
A dove stands in the Town Twinning Square as a symbol of peace and international understanding. It commemorates the ten-year partnership with Wadowice, the birthplace of Pope John Paul II. The memorials each have a distinct focus: the baptismal font recalls a biographical baptism, the column and plaque a papal visit, and the dove a town twinning partnership.
The Regional Setting: Altötting
Within the wider travel destination of Altötting, the district of Altötting provides the broader geographical setting. It lies along the Inn and Salzach rivers. The landscape is defined by a plain about 10 kilometres wide, through which the Inn flows, bordered to the north and south by lush green hills. This description applies to the district of Altötting and adds a regional perspective to the specific local points of interest in Marktl.
One popular variation of the Inn Cycle Path runs from Neuötting through Altötting and the extensive Ötting Forest to the ducal town of Burghausen, passing the confluence of the Inn and Salzach rivers on the way to Marktl. The section in the Inn-Salzach region is just over 75 kilometres long. This offers a longer regional perspective alongside the four cycling routes for which Marktl is a junction. Check the current route before setting out; diversions may apply.
