In Emmerting, a 5 km circular trail leads through the “Untere Alz” landscape conservation area and invites you to enjoy some peace and relaxation. This should be distinguished from the Untere Alz nature reserve: designated in 1990, it covers parts of Emmerting, Mehring, Marktl and Neuötting, as well as the Holzfelder Forst, and is approximately 760 hectares in size. The circular trail is therefore the specifically named route option; the protected area extends across several towns.

Hiking trails and directions

The Forest Circular Trail leads through Emmerting. In the surrounding area, it can be complemented by easy walks at the Untere Alz nature reserve or along the Klosterau Forest Experience Trail. This offers the route through the town alongside two hiking options with a different focus. Access to the Forest Experience Trail is via Hohenwart.

To find your way in Hohenwart, travel east from Emmerting along the sand-surfaced municipal connecting road, Alte PoststraĂźe, into the state forest. After about 600 metres, the hiking car park is on the left. The direction, road surface and road name provide specific details to help you locate the car park.

In the wider travel destination of Altötting

The wider travel destination of Altötting opens up views across the district, which lies along the Inn and Salzach rivers. A plain about 10 kilometres wide, through which the Inn flows, is bordered to the north and south by lush green hills. Together with the district of Mühldorf, Altötting belongs to the Inn-Salzach tourism region. Visitor information for the region includes, among other things, cycling and pilgrimage routes, museums and bathing lakes.

One nature highlight in the wider travel destination of Altötting is the internationally significant wetland and nature reserve “Unterer Inn between Haiming and Neuhaus.” It provides a habitat for migrating, overwintering and breeding marsh and water birds; more than 25 different bird species that depend on water and wetland habitats breed there. In Altöttinger Gries, the nature trail along the stream has ten interactive stations. A circular trail in Altöttinger Gries is approximately 1.4 kilometres long.

A popular variant of the Inn Cycle Path runs from Neuötting through Altötting and the extensive Öttinger Forst to the ducal town of Burghausen, and past the confluence of the Inn and Salzach rivers to Marktl. The section in the Inn-Salzach region is just over 75 kilometres long; detours may occur, so you should check the route notices before setting off. This is a different scale of route from the 5 km circular trail in Emmerting: it is a regional cycling route section rather than a local circular trail.

Altötting’s cultural attractions offer another focus. St. Anna Basilica is the largest church in Altötting and accommodates more than 8,000 people. The octagon of the Chapel of Grace was probably built around the year 700 and is considered probably the oldest centralized building in Germany. The Golden Horse in the Altötting Treasury was made in the Paris court workshops in 1404. At the Brother Konrad Museum, you can visit the Old Gate and Brother Konrad’s death cell.
