Grosselfingen combines a long history with the Ehrsame Narrengericht (Honourable Court of Fools) and a panoramic circular hike through the landscape at the foot of the Swabian Alb. When planning a stay, visitors can choose from several highlights: architectural history in the town centre, a performance that takes place at rare intervals, or a several-hour walk outdoors.

Town Centre and Landscape

Grosselfingen is set in a scenic location at the foot of the Swabian Alb. The municipality stretches across the Alb foothills between the valleys of the Starzel and Eyach rivers, reaching as far as the Keuper woodland. Farmhouses and barns in the centre reflect the municipality’s long agricultural heritage. At the same time, historic buildings have been preserved through renovation and conversion to new uses.

The central village square has parking spaces, green areas, quiet spots and a fountain. The town’s history can also be traced to specific dates: Grosselfingen was first mentioned in official records in 1296. In 1505, Emperor Maximilian granted the municipality market rights.

The Ehrsame Narrengericht

The roots of the Ehrsame Narrengericht go back one or two centuries before the Marian Brotherhood was founded in 1623. Its performance includes a procession, staged scenes, songs, dances and a court hearing. The programme therefore features various forms of communal play and performance.

Around 350 men and boys take part in a performance. It does not follow an annual schedule: the Narrengericht takes place on average every three to seven years. So check the current dates before travelling if you would like to plan your stay around the performance.

Grosselfingen Panoramic Circular Trail

The Grosselfingen Panoramic Circular Trail is a 14.94-kilometre circular hike. The route passes farmsteads, meadows and fields, following paved forest paths with uninterrupted views of the Alb escarpment. Rest benches and a reclining lounger provide places to take a break along the way.

The hike is listed as taking five hours. This is a planning estimate, not a guaranteed walking time. It makes the trail easy to plan as a separate, several-hour outing rather than squeezing it into an already tightly scheduled day. Check current trail conditions before setting off, as route details may be updated.

Cycling and Further Plans

The Bisingen–Grosselfingen cycle path project is another local point of interest for cyclists: it included a new section of about 1.1 kilometres. This figure refers to the project section and is a specific addition to the longer hiking option.

Plans for a multi-generational park include promoting health across generations and creating a place to spend time. Alongside local history and hiking, Grosselfingen is therefore also looking ahead to further plans for shared leisure spaces.
