In Albstadt, hikes through the countryside and a historic city walking tour in Ebingen offer two different ways to explore. Seasonal winter trails are also available in two districts. You can therefore focus your trip on nature, local history or a winter hike.
Hiking Around Albstadt
Eleven hiking trails known as the “Traufgänge” and “Traufgängerle” run around Albstadt. The German Hiking Association’s hiking quality seal certifies them as premium trails. The routes offer views and varied terrain, with narrow paths and natural trails. Landscape features include juniper heathlands, caves, gorges and the edges of the Swabian Alb escarpment, with their bizarre rock formations. The combination of striking natural features and varied trails makes hiking a defining part of a stay in Albstadt.
Plan Winter Traufgänge Hikes Based on Current Conditions
In Albstadt-Burgfelden and Albstadt-Onstmettingen, the Winter Traufgänge offer certified winter fun on trails specially groomed for hikers. Whether they are currently open depends on snow and the conditions on the day. Check the latest information before your visit and before making firm plans for a winter hike.
Explore Ebingen Independently
Those interested in local history can explore Ebingen’s Historic City Walking Tour independently. It leads to the oldest and most historically significant places in Ebingen’s city centre. The self-guided tour therefore offers a different focus from the hiking trails: here, historic sites take centre stage rather than natural features and trail routes.
These options are not interchangeable when choosing your itinerary: the Traufgänge and Traufgängerle are for hiking through the countryside, while the Ebingen tour focuses on local history. The Winter Traufgänge add a seasonal option. You can thus plan your visit around your interests and the time of year.
In the Wider Zollernalbkreis Destination
The wider Zollernalbkreis destination has 14 premium trails: eleven in Albstadt and three in Meßstetten. There are also more than 100 signposted circular hiking trails. These published trail counts may change as the network is updated. This puts Albstadt’s hiking options in a broader regional context.
Hohenzollern Castle is also in the Zollernalbkreis. The present-day castle is the third fortress on Zollerberg, belongs to the municipality of Bisingen and lies within the boundaries of the district of Zimmern. After its two predecessors were destroyed and fell into disrepair, it was rebuilt between 1850 and 1867. Its cultural programme includes concerts, family days, open-air cinema and exhibitions. The castle is open to visitors daily and offers a glimpse of its historic rooms. Check the current opening hours before your visit.
Other regional hiking options in the Zollernalbkreis include the 33-kilometre Schlichemwanderweg from MeĂźstetten-Tieringen to Epfendorf, with small waterfalls, wet meadows and a steep-sided gorge. The Geological Educational Trail on Westerberg above Nusplingen ends at a rock-hammering site. The regional options therefore include both a described hiking route with specific landscape features and a geological educational trail with a named endpoint.
