A press from 1858, forest stations about tree species and a viewpoint with views as far as the Alps on a clear day: Waldshut-Tiengen offers a variety of ways to enjoy a stay. To plan your visit, you can first choose what interests you most: historic places in Waldshut and Tiengen, routes on foot or by bike, or experiences on the Rhine.

City History in Waldshut and Tiengen

City tours are available in several formats: historical tours, dramatic costumed tours and themed walks. Depending on the tour, they may also lead to hidden corners and into buildings that are otherwise not open to the public. Formats and dates may vary, so check what is on offer during your visit in advance.

In Tiengen, the Catholic parish church of St. Mary’s Assumption is a late work by the Vorarlberg Baroque master builder Peter Thumb. It was built from 1753 to 1755; the lower part of its tower dates back to the Gothic predecessor building. In Waldshut, the foundations of the Upper Gate, also known as the Schaffhausen Gate, trace the history of the structure back to the 13th century. The Old Oil Mill in Tiengen offers a different point of interest: its equipment is made entirely of wood, and its press frame dates from 1858.

Tiengen Castle houses the Klettgau Museum, with a collection on local history. It includes archaeological finds from excavations in the Klettgau; a “Jewish Room” explores the history of Judaism in Tiengen. The local history museum in the Old Butchers’ Hall in Waldshut opens for special exhibitions. Check before your visit whether an exhibition is taking place.

Forest Trail, Wildlife Park and Viewpoint

The Eibenwald Adventure Trail, established in 2019, is near the wildlife park and loops around the yew forest. Along its 1.7-kilometre route, stations provide information about the local forest, tree species, forestry and timber, and the role dead trees play in the cycle of life. Parking is available at the entrance portal; the trail is about a 45-minute walk from Waldshut’s old town.

At Waldshut Wildlife Park, you can observe various species of deer, wild boar, ibex, mouflon, dwarf goats, owls, other birds and some small animals. Food for some of the animals is available from vending machines; animal populations and feeding options may change. The Mittelweg leads to the park from the town centre, and the walk takes about 45 minutes. The wildlife park also has a large playground. The Eibenwald forest stations and wildlife watching offer different ways to enjoy an outing.

In Tiengen, the Vitibuck Tower has an observation platform at a height of 37 metres. From there, you can see across Tiengen and the surrounding area; on a clear day, the view reaches over Küssaburg as far as the Alps. At the foot of the tower are a small hiking car park, a barbecue area and a children’s playground.

Cycling and Hiking Routes, Rhine Cruises

The three Stadt.Wald.Fluss. cycling routes start at Waldshut railway station. They lead around Waldshut or Tiengen and through their respective districts. The routes cover 26 to 47 kilometres, with ascents and descents of between 500 and 1,000 metres. They run mainly on asphalt, forest and meadow paths, and are not signposted throughout. As routes and signposting may change, it is worth checking the latest route information before setting off.

If you prefer to explore on foot, the “Doppelpack” circular hike offers another way to include several destinations: the route passes the old towns of Waldshut and Tiengen, Vitibuck Tower, and the banks of the Wutach and the Rhine. You can shorten it using public transport or walk it in two sections. Check the availability of public transport before your hike.

On certain days, the boat runs hourly between the landing stages in Waldshut and Full in Switzerland. One- or two-hour round trips are available in the afternoon. Operating days and timetables may change; check the times when planning your trip. Various culinary cruises on the Rhine can be booked for the evening. Offers and booking options may change.
