Hohentengen am Hochrhein lies in southern Germany, right on the Swiss border. The municipality consists of six districts: Hohentengen, Lienheim, Herdern, Bergöschingen, Günzgen and Stetten.

Cross-border culture and castle ruins

A bridge over the Rhine connects Hohentengen with the medieval town of Kaiserstuhl on the Swiss side. The cross-border sculpture trail links the town of Kaiserstuhl and the municipality of Hohentengen across the national border. These are different kinds of cross-border connections: the bridge connects two places, while the sculpture trail forms a cultural route between a town and a municipality.

Between Hohentengen and Lienheim, near the Guggenmühle mill, lies the woodland-surrounded ruin of Weißwasserstelz Castle. A short footpath leads to the remains of the walls. The castle was built around the 11th century and originally belonged to Reichenau Abbey. Its approximate date and connection to the abbey provide historical context for the ruins; for travellers interested in medieval history, it is a tangible point of reference.

Hiking trails and the cycling network

Well-marked hiking trails make it easy to explore on foot, leading through the vineyards, along the sculpture trail and through the forest to Bergöschingen. A destination with views over the Rhine Valley also complements the hiking trails.

From the centre of Hohentengen, the route follows Bergstraße to the local road between Hohentengen and Bergöschingen. Shortly after the first rest stop at the pavilion, a forest path signposted as a Kneipp water-treading facility branches off to the right; the facility is about 200 metres along on the right. Signs and directions on site may change, so check them before setting out.

Seasonal activities and travel dates

The outdoor pools in Hohentengen and Lienheim are open during the outdoor swimming season. The pool in Hohentengen has a slide and is considered a family-friendly destination. Check the current opening days before travelling.

The Hohentengen Wine Festival is held every year in autumn on the second weekend of September. Confirm the dates for the year you plan to visit. St. Antonius Chapel is available for baptisms and weddings; if you are planning an event, make the arrangements locally.

When choosing your travel dates, it helps to consider the difference between these activities: the Wine Festival takes place on a recurring date in September, while the outdoor pools are open during the outdoor swimming season. If swimming or attending the festival is a priority, check the current opening or event dates for your travel dates.

City history in Waldshut

In the wider destination of Waldshut, Kaiserstraße became a pedestrian zone in 1989. The town stream was moved back to the middle of the street, and three fountains were rebuilt. The changes affected both how the street was used and the design of the public space.
