Ibach is a municipality in the Waldshut district of Baden-Württemberg and part of the Black Forest Biosphere Reserve. The large protected areas of Kohlhütte-Lampenschweine and Kirchspielwald-Ibacher Moos are located within the municipality. This means two geographic scales come together: Ibach’s inclusion in the biosphere reserve and the named protected areas within the municipality. The different trail options also provide a practical starting point for planning a trip: the panoramic trail, access to the Schluchtensteig, cross-country ski trails, winter hiking trails and cycling tours each focus on different activities.
Hiking: Panoramic Trail and Schluchtensteig
The Ibacher Panoramic Trail has been certified as a premium hiking trail since August 2016 and is part of the 119-kilometre premium hiking trail from StĂĽhlingen to Wehr. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the details: the name refers to the Ibacher Panoramic Trail, while the distance refers to the entire trail between StĂĽhlingen and Wehr. This lets you decide whether to focus first on the local trail or the longer route.
Schorrmättleplatz is a hiking car park with access to the Schluchtensteig Black Forest. Here, a named starting point is the main point of reference, whereas the panoramic trail is defined by its certification and its inclusion in the 119-kilometre route. Guests in Dachsberg and Ibach can also enjoy an extensive network of trails for hiking, Nordic walking, cycling and winter tours. Before setting out, check the conditions on your chosen route.
Winter trails, cross-country ski trails and cycling tours
The Steffi-Böhler cross-country ski trails start beside the church car park in Unteribach. This starting point is clearly identified; trail grooming depends on the season. These are distinct from the groomed winter hiking trails that lead through Ibach’s high-altitude areas and forests. Their availability depends on snow conditions and maintenance. When planning a winter trip, cross-country skiing and hiking should therefore be considered separately: grooming is key for the ski trails, while the condition of each trail matters for winter hiking. Check snow and maintenance conditions on the winter trails before your tour; for the ski trails, seasonal grooming is the deciding factor.
Cyclists can find tours in and around Ibach. The municipality’s tourist links include information about sights, tours, accommodation providers, events and dining. When planning, you can therefore consider other aspects of your stay alongside an activity, such as finding accommodation or places to eat.
A historical perspective on Waldshut
In the wider destination of Waldshut, Kaiserstraße tells the story of a change in public space: when it became a pedestrian zone in 1989, the town stream was moved back to the middle of the street and three fountains were rebuilt. The sequence of events connects a new use for the street with the redesign of its centre. This history of Waldshut adds another cultural theme to the destination, alongside Ibach’s nature and trail options.
