The Linachtalsperre adds a distinctive technical landmark to Vöhrenbach. The town is also home to the centuries-old Fasnet tradition, an outdoor swimming pool and a cycle route connecting to the Danube Route. These themes are easy to distinguish when planning a trip: technical history and tours at the dam, leisure time at the outdoor pool, or a stay focused on culture.

Linachtalsperre: technical history and tour planning

Germany’s first and only multiple-arch dam with a sloping upstream face is located within Vöhrenbach’s municipal area. Together with its associated power station, it forms a unique technical museum. The dam was built between 1922 and 1925; the town of Vöhrenbach renovated and reactivated it between 2005 and 2007. It is Germany’s only reinforced-concrete multiple-arch dam and a nationally significant cultural heritage monument. Its design, construction period and subsequent renovation give its technical history a clearly defined scope.

For a more in-depth look at the site, there is the interactive audio adventure tour “The Rescue of the Linachtalsperre.” It follows a circular route, starts and ends on the crest of the dam, and takes about two to two and a half hours. You can walk along the dam crest when the reservoir is impounded. Take this condition into account when planning, and check in advance if you intend to walk across the crest.

The hydropower educational trail offers a different perspective: it starts at the power station building, goes around the lake and explains the rare technical structure with information panels. The two routes offer different ways to explore the area: the audio adventure tour has a stated duration and starts and finishes on the dam crest, while the educational trail circles the lake and explores hydropower through its information panels.

An outdoor pool and cycle route as additional highlights

Vöhrenbach’s solar-heated swimming pool has a 50-metre pool and a children’s paddling pool. The outdoor pool also has a water slide and two diving towers with 1-metre and 3-metre boards. If you are planning a visit, check the seasonal opening hours in advance.

The flat Bregtal cycle route is another option for cyclists. It is suitable for families and connects to the Danube Cycle Route. Its flat terrain and connection to a long-distance cycle route make it a different planning option from the paths around the Linachtalsperre. When choosing what to focus on during your stay, you can opt for cycling, technical history or swimming without combining these activities into a single tour.

Fasnet and traditional architecture

Vöhrenbach’s centuries-old Fasnet tradition includes Kappenabende and the Great Monday Parade, and continues to shape the town’s Fasnet celebrations today. If your trip is planned around a specific Fasnet event, check the dates for your travel period.

The Uhrmacherhäusle is another chapter in the town’s architectural history. Clockmaker Elias Dolt built it in 1725. The restored house is a typical example of a small Black Forest craftsman’s home built of wood. The comparison thus sets the technical history of water engineering alongside small-scale timber construction.

A broader perspective: the Schwarzwald-Baar district

The regional context can also be of interest when choosing when to travel. In the Schwarzwald-Baar district, Fastnacht lasts six days, from Schmotziger Dunnschtig to Ash Wednesday. In December 2014, the Swabian-Alemannic Fasnet in the Schwarzwald-Baar district was added to the nationwide UNESCO Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This information refers to the district as a broader travel destination; Vöhrenbach’s Kappenabende and Great Monday Parade are local Fasnet events.

Plan your stay to suit you

Allow about two to two and a half hours for the audio adventure tour. For the outdoor pool, check the seasonal opening hours; if you are travelling for Fasnet, check the specific event dates. This lets you tailor your stay to your interests without assuming an unverified route or a particular accommodation location.
