Kreßberg is appealing for its trails through floodplains, meadow valleys and gentle hills, as well as two chapels with their own histories. Hiking and Nordic walking are the main outdoor activities; cycling routes and the seasonal Bergertshofen Forest Outdoor Pool round out the options. This makes it easy to plan a trip around the landscape, outdoor activities or local history.
Hiking, Nordic Walking and Cycling
Kreßberg is characterised by gentle hills, expansive meadows and quiet forests. Hiking and Nordic walking routes lead through floodplains and meadow valleys, along the foothills of the Franconian Alb and past historic buildings. Walks through idyllic floodplains and green meadow valleys offer peaceful places to linger and take in the scenery.
Cycling routes in Kreßberg include WälderTour-Ost and Juhe-Tour; check the route and signage before setting out. The route from Marktlustenau is separate from these named cycling routes: it passes Burg Hohenkreßberg and then climbs Kreßberg to an elevation of 528 metres. A connecting route runs via Mosbach from Marktlustenau to Feuchtwangen. The 528-metre elevation applies to the route via Burg Hohenkreßberg; the connection via Mosbach, by contrast, names Marktlustenau and Feuchtwangen as its endpoints.
Bergertshofen Forest Outdoor Pool
Bergertshofen Forest Outdoor Pool has a 50-metre pool divided into swimming and non-swimming areas. Facilities include a heated children's paddling pool with a slide. There is also a three-hectare sunbathing lawn, play equipment, table tennis tables and a kiosk. The pool operates seasonally, and facilities may also change; check the latest information before your visit.
Chapels and History
The Romanesque St. Nicholas Chapel in Bergertshofen dates from around 1100 and was first mentioned in a document in 1444. The chapel in Mariäkappel was rebuilt in 1480 after the spring had attracted many visitors. For St. Nicholas Chapel, the approximate construction date and the later first written mention are therefore distinct details; the rebuilding of Mariäkappel chapel is linked to the large number of visitors drawn to the spring.
Getting There by Train
Kreßberg can be reached by train via the Interregio route Nürnberg–Stuttgart–Karlsruhe; the destination station is Crailsheim. Check the current timetable before travelling.
Urban Culture in the Wider Destination of Schwäbisch Hall
Within the wider destination of Schwäbisch Hall, the town of Schwäbisch Hall offers a different, urban and historic focus. In the old town, largely unchanged medieval lanes sit alongside sections of the city wall, numerous towers, covered wooden bridges, many stairways and Stäffele, as well as a historic market square. The Hällisch-Fränkisches Museum is housed in seven historic buildings; the collegiate church of St. Nicholas at Großcomburg Monastery is home to a Romanesque wheel chandelier. Kunsthalle Würth opened in 2001; the Hohenloher Open-Air Museum in Schwäbisch Hall-Wackershofen comprises more than 75 historic buildings. The centuries-old Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela and the Kocher-Jagst Cycle Route also pass through Schwäbisch Hall. The wider destination offers a choice of very different attractions: Kreßberg’s landscape routes and chapels, or the old town and museums in Schwäbisch Hall.
