Edingen-Neckarhausen combines cultural history with riverside landscapes and routes for observing nature. The Palace Park in Neckarhausen, the Fish Nursery between the two districts and the Edinger Ried each offer something different. There are also opportunities for walking, paddling and fishing, as well as a leisure pool.

A historic palace park with special features

The Palace Park, covering around three hectares, is located in the old centre of Neckarhausen. As for Neckarhausen Palace, its origins lie in a Thurn und Taxis post house, which had been operating in Neckarhausen since at least 1634. The park’s diverse trees, meadow valleys and sightlines invite visitors to relax and stroll. Those interested in the history of the estate can also find an ice cellar there: during winter, blocks of ice sawn from the frozen Neckar River were stored in it.

For many years, the park has been home to hundreds of Alexandrine parakeets. Admission is free. As opening arrangements may change, check the latest access information before your visit.

Waterways and nature watching on the Neckar

Between Edingen and Neckarhausen lies the Fish Nursery, covering around 13,000 square metres. As a side channel of the Neckar, it provides a breeding and refuge area for fish and gives the public access to the water. A path along the bank and viewing platforms make it possible to observe nature. The river also has an outdoor classroom with a sun sail and tiered seating, intended for schools and young anglers.

The Neckar riverbank itself is also used for local recreation: extensive walking paths run along the river. The Neckar and its floodplain are also used for paddling, fishing and relaxation. You can therefore tailor your visit to your interests, with a walk along the bank or time by the water, while keeping the different places and activities distinct.

Explore the Edinger Ried on foot

The Edinger Ried offers a different perspective on the municipality’s landscape. In the Rhine floodplains, the area is characterised by marshland, deciduous woodland, ponds, small lakes and an old arm of the Rhine. Broad walking paths run along the Rhine dikes. This provides a choice of walks in addition to the routes along the Neckar riverbank, in a landscape shaped by floodplains and waterways.

Leisure pool and cultural venues

The Edingen-Neckarhausen leisure pool has a 25-metre pool with a diving tower, a whirlpool with an exercise pool, and an outdoor pool with reclining bays. Facilities also include a toddlers’ pool, a sunbathing lawn with views of the Neckar, a massage practice and a sauna. Operating information may change; check the pool’s latest notices before your visit.

The orangery in the Palace Park was fully restored in 2008 and is available for cultural events. The municipal museum is also part of local cultural life: the Municipal Museum Interest Group supports the municipality in setting up and operating the museum and promotes art, culture, exhibitions and the preservation of cultural heritage.

Crossings over the Neckar

The Neckarhausen ferry connects Edingen-Neckarhausen with Ladenburg across the Neckar. Service may be interrupted in bad weather or during high water; check the latest timetable information before crossing. A railway bridge also connects the two towns and can be used by cyclists and pedestrians. In the Rhine-Neckar district, much of the townscape in Ladenburg’s historic centre remains medieval in character, with some Roman influences.
