In Nußloch, trails reveal different sides of the town: the discovery trail focuses on limestone, while the forest and orchard nature trails explore natural themes. Together with the local history museum, they offer a picture that brings landscape, local history and regional traditions together. So you can choose what interests you for your stay: geology, tree species, fruit varieties or the history of Nußloch.

Landscape and Municipal Forest

Nußloch’s natural landscape lies at the meeting point of the Kraichgau, the Odenwald, the Rhine Plain and the Southern Bergstraße. The municipal area ranges from 103 to 317 metres above sea level; its diverse soil conditions shape a varied landscape. The municipal forest is also a distinctive part of this landscape: it covers around 350 hectares and has been managed in a nature-friendly way for several decades. A large part lies within the Bergstraße-Süd Landscape Conservation Area and is designated as a Flora-Fauna-Habitat area.

The species-rich forest is dominated by beech trees, mixed with oak, ash, maple, lime, elm, larch, spruce and Douglas fir. Service trees, wild service trees and walnut trees are also found here. The ground vegetation includes rare orchids. Numerous well-maintained paths and trails in the municipal area lead to scenic and historically interesting places. The upland area in particular, with its extensive forests, is ideal for varied hikes.

Nature Trails with Different Themes

The Nußloch discovery trail offers insights into the formation of limestone and its extraction today. It also explores natural havens created through renaturation after quarrying. Visitors interested in how landscape and human activity interact will find a different thematic perspective here than on the trails in the municipal forest.

The forest nature trail starts at the Weiße Hohl car park. From there, it follows Wieslocher Weg, Blockhüttenweg, Neuer Weg and Maisbacher Fußweg back to the starting point. Along the way, visitors can learn about numerous tree species and discover interesting facts about the Nußloch municipal forest. The bird nature trail also runs through the municipal forest, following Wieslocher Weg, Amerikanerweg, Tannengartenweg and Neuer Weg back to the starting point. These named paths give you clear guidance when choosing between the routes.

Another focus is the orchard nature trail. It is about three kilometres long, passes through scenic parts of the municipal area and features 32 information boards about fruit tree varieties. This gives it a distinct focus alongside the themes of limestone and the municipal forest.

Local History and Regional Traditions

The Nußloch local history museum invites you to discover the town’s living history through its exhibits. It is located at Fahrweg 3, a few minutes’ walk from Lindenplatz. Check the current visitor information before your visit.

The Honigzwetschge plum is also part of local history: it occurs in its pure wild form within the Nußloch municipal area. In the past, the plum was used in many ways, including for baking and cooking, as well as in liquid form. This glimpse into its former uses complements the nature themes of the trails with a connection to local food culture.

More Things to Discover in the Rhein-Neckar District

The wider travel destination of the Rhein-Neckar district offers further attractions in their own right. Schwetzingen Palace, once the summer residence of the Prince Electors, has a Rococo theatre and a world-famous park. In Ladenburg, large parts of the historic townscape are still shaped by the Middle Ages and, in places, by the Roman period. The Technik Museum Sinsheim displays the Concorde. At Lake Waidsee in Weinheim, there are areas for paddlers, sailors and windsurfers; at the bathing lake in St. Leon, visitors can water-ski or wakeboard on a cable system. These attractions complement the local focus on Nußloch’s landscape, trails and local history with further aspects of the wider travel destination.
