An 18-bell carillon, a school museum in the town hall and a marked circular route each offer a different perspective on Meckesheim. Visitors choosing the town for a stay can find both traces of local history and practical ideas for spending time outdoors.

Town hall, school museum and traces of history

The Old Town Hall in the town centre was built in 1729 and extensively renovated between 2019 and 2024. Its small roof turret houses a carillon of 18 bells, cast at the “Royal Eijsbouts” bell foundry in Asten, the Netherlands. The historic building and its carillon provide a distinctive focal point in the town centre.

The town hall was once a schoolhouse; today it houses the “Alte Schulstube” (Old Classroom) School Museum. Depending on your age, you can learn about what school life used to be like or reminisce about your own school days. The museum offers a different way to explore local history than the town hall’s architecture: here, the focus is on memories of school and everyday life.

Another trace of history is the atonement cross on the western edge of town. It depicts a baker’s peel with a circle above it, probably representing a loaf of bread. The symbols suggest that a baker lost his life there; when this happened is not recorded.

Circular route, town tour and alla hopp! facility

An approximately 5-kilometre circular route leads over the Gemeindeberg hill to the public observatory, then through the town centre and the alla hopp! facility on the way back. A blue sun symbol marks the route throughout. Its approximate length and the route described can help you plan your outing; check local information for possible changes before setting out.

The alla hopp! facility is open daily year-round from 08:00 to 22:00 and is free to use. You can visit it as a destination in its own right; the circular route also passes through the facility on the way back. Check local information before your visit.

There is also an interactive tour of Meckesheim called “Entdecke Dein Dorf!” (“Discover Your Village!”). Ten blue pillars bear QR code signs that you can scan to listen to 26 audio features about nearby buildings and squares. While the circular route provides a guide to its course and length, the tour draws attention to individual buildings and places in town.

Railway station and finding accommodation

Meckesheim’s railway station is another distinctive feature: it is the only station on the Rhine-Neckar S-Bahn where S-Bahn trains are split and joined every hour. As rail services can change, check current connections and operating procedures when planning your trip.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first what you would like to focus on: should your stay centre mainly on Meckesheim’s local history and circular route, or would you also like to consider other themes across the wider Rhein-Neckar-Kreis travel destination?

More to explore in the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis

The wider travel destination is the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis. Its cultural and natural attractions offer further options: Schwetzingen Palace has a Rococo theatre and a world-famous park. Much of Ladenburg’s historic townscape still reflects the Middle Ages and, in places, Roman times. Those interested in guided activities in the forest can join free forest walks and excursions throughout the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis as part of the annual “Ab in den Wald” programme.
