Eppelheim combines architectural and local history with theater performances, traditional festivals and outdoor leisure activities. Highlights include the historic water tower, the annual program at the Rudolf-Wild-Halle and festivals held on specific dates throughout the year. The city park, skate park and Gisela-Mierke-Bad add to the range of options. When planning your visit, it makes a difference whether you are scheduling your trip around a particular event date or would also like to include places such as the park and swimming pool.

The City’s History at the Water Tower

The water tower is a city landmark and a listed monument. It was handed over to the municipality, as it was then, in 1907 by the company Stephan und Schneider, after just under a year of construction. At 47.6 meters, it was Eppelheim’s tallest structure until the 1970s. Its water tank held 220 cubic meters; the natural head of water generated the pressure needed in the local water pipes.

The tower is built of brick. A contrasting sandstone base and a replica arcade walkway define its design. The building houses a wedding room. The first German Hare Museum opened on the ground floor in 2009.

Pauluskirche also offers a glimpse into the past: its Late Gothic tower portal dates from the 15th century and is the oldest part of a building in Eppelheim.

Theater, Traditions and Festivals

The Rudolf-Wild-Halle presents an annual season of classical and contemporary theater, comedy, cabaret, regional dialect performances and music for all ages. Individual performances and dates vary. If a show is the reason for your trip, check the current program in advance.

The Sommertagszug is an old tradition that symbolically drives winter away for good. On the second Sunday after Easter, the procession travels from the town hall to the festival grounds in the parking lot of the Rhein-Neckar-Halle. Since the date is tied to Easter, it is worth checking that year’s event dates.

The Eppelheimer Kerwe street festival has been celebrated for generations on the first weekend in October. Tents and stalls offer food from the region and Eppelheim’s partner cities. Confirm the specific festival dates before planning your trip.

At the Eppelheim Christmas Village, visitors can discover festive crafts and treats over two days. While Christmas festivities take place in the forecourt, a craft market runs concurrently in the Rudolf-Wild-Halle. Kindergartens, schools, clubs and other performers put on a program on the stage in front of the hall. Program details may vary.

Leisure at the City Park, Skate Park and Swimming Pool

You can picnic on a lawn in the city park, which also has a play area with a pirate ship. It offers a different way to spend time outdoors from attending events in the hall or on the streets.

The skate park at the Capri-Sonne Sports Center has three ramps of different slopes and sizes. If you plan to visit, check its current availability in advance.

Gisela-Mierke-Bad offers regular public swimming. Before a specific visit, check the pool’s website for current opening details. Together with the city park and skate park, it provides another leisure option alongside cultural and seasonal events.
