Waldburg brings together three distinct themes: planets, traditional orchards and the castle complex. The Planet Trail leads to the observatory, the Orchard Trail showcases various fruit trees, and Waldburg Castle is considered one of the best-preserved castle complexes in southern Germany.

Planet Trail and Orchard Trail

The Planet Trail begins at the town hall in the centre of the village and runs along the main road and Amtzeller Straße, past the schoolyard and on to the observatory. Information boards provide details about each planet. The trail thus connects a starting point in the village centre with a destination that fits its astronomical theme. Anyone with a particular interest in planets will find a clear thread leading from the town hall to the observatory.

The Waldburg Orchard Trail focuses on something different. It extends from Hof Sutter, north of Waldburg, to Schädlers Kreuz and showcases 40 different fruit trees, each with an information board in front of it. The information therefore relates to a specific tree. Unlike the Planet Trail, which has boards about planets, this trail focuses on fruit trees. The two trails can thus be distinguished by their subject: astronomy on the one hand and traditional orchards on the other.

Castle, map and puzzle trail

Waldburg Castle is considered one of the best-preserved castle complexes in southern Germany. Waldburg Castle presents the Waldseemüller map as the “baptismal certificate of America” and as a UNESCO Memory of the World. Another way to explore the castle is the Castle Rally: visitors aged 12 to 99 solve puzzles inside the castle. The map and the rally offer different experiences: one presents a UNESCO Memory of the World, while the other invites visitors to solve puzzles themselves.

Traditional orchards and regional produce

Today, ADRIAN Genussmanufaktur uses apples and pears from traditional orchards in Upper Swabia to make high-quality vinegars, fruit juices and sparkling wines. Traditional orchards are therefore represented both on the trail and in the fruit used by the producer. The products made may change over time. Various ADRIAN products can be sampled in the vaulted cellar of ADRIAN Genussmanufaktur. If you plan to take part in a tasting, confirm the visit details directly with the producer before travelling.

Four small field chapels are scattered across the wider area around Waldburg. Locally, three of the older chapels are known as Hustenkäpele, Grimmen- and Oißenkäppele.

Culture in the wider Ravensburg destination

In the wider Ravensburg destination, the Humpis-Quartier Museum offers a distinctive focus on cultural history. It opened in July 2009, and its permanent exhibition spans five buildings in a late-medieval residential quarter. Regular public tours and individually bookable guided tours are available for school classes, children and adults. Check booking details in advance, as they may change. Achberg Castle is the cultural centre of the Ravensburg district. Perched high above the Argental valley, it showcases Baroque architecture. It is open to all visitors and offers educational activities for children.
