Eichstegen combines a varied moraine landscape with local history, from the Chapel of Mary to the former Hirschegg Castle. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay that combines nature, activity and culture, you can choose your focus based on these features: time outdoors, local history or an event in community life.

Landscape and trails in Eichstegen

In terms of its natural geography, Eichstegen is part of the Upper Swabian Hills. The municipal area extends between the inner and outer Young Moraine. Dry moraine ridges and damp, partly peaty lowlands shape the landscape. This brings different types of landscape together, defining the natural surroundings of the town.

Part of the 50-hectare Altshauser Weiher nature reserve lies within the municipal area of Eichstegen. There is an extensive network of walking and cycling routes for outdoor activities, inviting visitors to hike and cycle. When planning your time outdoors, you can first choose between the two modes of travel and explore the landscape on foot or by bike.

The Chapel of Mary and local history

The Chapel of Mary in Eichstegen was built in 1972 to replace a demolished Baroque chapel and belongs to the Catholic parish of Altshausen. A regular event at the chapel is the ecumenical prayer for peace: it is held on the first Friday of each month outside school holidays. It lasts about 25 minutes. The flexible format may include Taizé songs or similar songs, meditation or prayer, the Lord’s Prayer and a blessing. If you would like to attend the prayer, check the date and format in advance; the duration and participation requirements may change.

The former Hirschegg Castle is also part of the history of the municipal area. It is considered the ancestral seat of the extinct Hirschegg family. Simple pottery can be found in Käfersulgen. The two topics offer different perspectives: Hirschegg points to the area’s former aristocratic history, while the pottery has a connection to local craftsmanship.

Community life and places to eat

The rural women’s association offers activities for locals and visitors. These include gatherings, lectures, craft evenings, hikes and visits, as well as social get-togethers over coffee and homemade cake. In addition, the associations and municipal administration organize social and cultural events throughout the year. If you would like a particular activity to shape your travel plans, check the date in advance.

For a meal, the Vesperstüble Häuserhof in Eichstegen serves traditional local food and drinks. In Hirschegg, a district of the municipality, you will find the Frohe Aussicht restaurant, run by the Koch family. If you plan to visit either restaurant, check the current opening hours in advance.

Getting there and planning

State and district roads connect Eichstegen to the long-distance road network, particularly the nearby B32. Bus services operated by the Bodensee-Oberschwaben transport association provide public transport. If you are travelling by bus, it is advisable to check the current timetable.

The Altshausen–Schwackenreute railway line, in operation since 1873/75, had a stop at Kreenried. Passenger services were discontinued in 1971 and the line was closed, but since 2011 it has been used for excursion traffic. Bus services and excursion trains should be considered separately when planning: the railway line is not part of regular passenger services. Check the current operating days and availability before planning a trip.

When choosing your accommodation, you can weigh these different priorities against one another: landscape and activity, local history, an event at the Chapel of Mary or an activity in community life. This way, your search for a hotel can reflect what you would like to do during your stay in Eichstegen.
