Twelve tractors, a historic village smithy and a castle on the Sechta: Unterschneidheim combines the history of technology and everyday life with distinctive sites in the village. There is also a recreation pond with a sunbathing lawn and beach volleyball court.
Technology, crafts and rural everyday life
The Unterschneidheim Rural and Technology Museum currently has twelve tractors. A stationary engine for generating electricity, dating from 1948, can still be started up. The permanent exhibition also features a fully equipped village smithy and a shoemaker’s workshop from Zipplingen. Machinery and workshops are displayed alongside agricultural equipment and objects that tell the story of rural life and work.
Some of the items on display are particularly rare. The collection offers a variety of points of interest: the tractors and stationary engine draw attention to technology, while the smithy, shoemaker’s workshop and everyday objects focus on craftsmanship and rural life. Anyone interested in the history of tools and trades will find more here than just a single type of machine.
Castle and church: different historical periods
On the Sechta, the castle of the former Teutonic Order bailiff, dating from the late Renaissance, stands on one of Unterschneidheim’s three medieval castle mounds. The combination of a medieval castle mound and a late Renaissance castle draws attention to different historical periods at one site. The Catholic parish church adds another historical date: according to its inscription, it was built in 1457 and extended in 1868.
Recreation pond and places to visit in the Ostalbkreis district
The Unterschneidheim recreation pond has a spacious sunbathing lawn and a beach volleyball court. Alongside the museum and architectural history, it offers a local place to spend time outdoors. The activities differ considerably: one option is relaxing by the pond, the other exploring technology and history.
The Limes Park Rainau in the Ostalbkreis district offers a distinct focus on Roman history. The Upper German-Rhaetian Limes has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005 and runs through the Rainau municipal area for about six kilometres, passing through Buch, Schwabsberg and Dalkingen. A reconstructed watchtower there offers panoramic views across the Ostalb region. The signposted Limes circular hiking trail near Rainau is about eleven kilometres long; the stated walking time is approximately two and a half hours. It runs from the Limes wall and Limes tower between Buch and Schwabsberg through the Mahdholz forest, following the Limes to the southern edge of Schwabsberg. The distance and walking time provide a concrete guide to how long this hike takes.
Other cultural destinations in the Ostalbkreis district offer different points of interest. Lorch Abbey was founded in 1102 by Frederick I, the first Hohenstaufen, and his wife Agnes of Waiblingen as their burial place. The complex includes a medieval church, cloister, outbuildings and the Marsiliusturm, which offers views of the abbey, its gardens and the surrounding area. The permanent exhibition covers 900 years of abbey history, including the decorated Lorch choir books. At the Tiefer Stollen visitor mine, the mine train passes through mineral formations and small stalactites into sandstone chambers covering 2,500 square metres, 100 metres underground. A multimedia show introduces the history of ore mining in the Aalen area; a circular trail leads through former mining areas, with shafts, loading stations and ore extraction chambers.
Choose the right focus for your accommodation

This way, you can tailor your search to the actual focus of your trip rather than deciding solely on the basis of the longest possible list of places to visit.
