The Ipf is more than a striking conical hill: with its long history of settlement and status as a natural monument, it embodies Bopfingen’s connection between landscape and cultural history. Other highlights include the ruins of Flochberg Castle, remnants of the town’s former fortifications, and museums that bring different eras into focus. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between these highlights: the Ipf is associated with early settlement and nature, while the town offers architectural history, guided tours, and art.

The Ipf: Early Settlement and Nature

The Ipf near Bopfingen is a 668-metre-high conical hill and a cultural and natural monument. Traces of settlement from the Neolithic, Bronze Age, and Iron Age point to its early use. The Ipf is also a designated nature reserve with abundant and distinctive flora and fauna. Archaeological history and protected nature are two different aspects of this same striking place.

At the foot of the prominent witness hill is the open-air museum at the Ipf. Its grounds include a partially preserved palisade and a total of four reconstructed buildings from the La Tène period. They represent the early settlement phase of the Bopfingen area. Visitors who would like to learn more about the Ipf can also book guided tours: open tours are offered year-round, as well as cultural tours on various topics. These offer the opportunity to explore the hill from archaeological, geological, and historical perspectives. Seasonal details may vary; check the current arrangements before your visit.

Town History Between the Seelhaus and the Town Wall

The IPF Museum in the Seelhaus is in the centre of Bopfingen. It presents the history of the Ipf, along with the culture and way of life of the people who lived there in the Early Iron Age. The ruins of Flochberg Castle are also represented there in a model showing what the complex may once have looked like. The cautious wording matters: the model depicts one possible version of its former appearance.

The castle ruins themselves rise prominently above Bopfingen and make a good destination for an outing. Their origins date back to the 10th or 11th century. Visitors who would like to discover the historic town on a guided tour can choose from tours currently available to book through the former Free Imperial City. They pass the historic town hall complex, wind through narrow lanes, and lead to the town wall. Check the current arrangements when planning your visit.

One particularly striking remnant of the town’s fortifications survives in the Henlesturm tower. In the town garden, a restored view of the town wall shows what the tall walls once looked like; only a small part of the original structure remains today. Another art-historical highlight is the Late Gothic altar in St. Blasius Town Church. It was created in 1472, designed and crafted by Friedrich Herlin, a painter from Nördlingen.

Since 1993, Bopfingen-Oberdorf has been home to the Museum of Jewish History in the Ostalbkreis, housed in a former synagogue that is a listed building. Parts of a genizah find and donations provide insight into rural Jewish life in the 19th and 20th centuries. Visits are available by request.

Cycling and Nature Watching

Cyclists can enjoy a mountain bike trail park at Sandberg in Bopfingen. The Große Ries-Runde is a different kind of route: 100 kilometres long, it starts in Bopfingen, circles the Ries crater, and returns to Bopfingen after passing through Fremdingen, Oettingen, Wemding, Harburg, Mönchsdeggingen, Ederheim, and Riesbürg. Its stated length helps put this tour in perspective as a more substantial cycling option, clearly distinct from the local trail park.

Wildlife watching is also part of the nature experience: a herd of around 20 aurochs lives along the renaturalised Sechtaaue between Oberdorf and Kerkingen. Hikers and cyclists can observe the animals on a signposted circular route at the foot of the Ipf and Baldern Castle.

This makes it easy to pair your search for hotels in Bopfingen with the things you are interested in seeing locally, without combining different tours and attractions into a single itinerary.
