Stödtlen offers several distinct ways to experience a stay: the Pond Trail passes the cemetery with its rebus before continuing to Volkemer Pond. Other trails take in the old castle site, a chapel or the Limes. You can therefore focus on ponds and nature, notable points along the trails or history.
Hiking Trails and Nature in Stödtlen
The Panorama Trail passes the old castle site with its tree trail and continues via Niederroden to Wildenberg Chapel. The Pond Trail offers different highlights: its route includes the cemetery with the rebus and Volkemer Pond. When choosing, you can consider whether you would rather visit these pond stops or take in the castle site, tree trail and chapel.
The Swabian Alb Association’s Main Hiking Trail 6 also offers a distinct historical connection: it passes through the municipality of Stödtlen and follows the route of the Limes. A beaver population has created a biotope at and around Krummerweiher Pond. The pond is therefore another nature-related attraction; the description does not present it as a stop on either the Panorama Trail or the Pond Trail.
At the Pfauengarten animal park, visitors can see animals from different regions up close. Check the operator’s latest visitor information before travelling. This makes it easy to plan a visit to the animal park as a separate activity, apart from the hiking trails mentioned and their respective routes.
Getting Your Bearings at the Starting Point
Free parking is available at the town hall in Stödtlen. Check the local regulations when you arrive. The parking option at the town hall is a practical point of reference for planning; it does not imply a specific connection between the car park and any of the trails mentioned.
More Places to Explore in the Ostalbkreis
The wider travel destination of the Ostalbkreis offers other, separate options for culture, history and hiking. In Rainau, the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes shapes the municipal area in the districts of Buch, Schwabsberg and Dalkingen over a stretch of around six kilometres. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. Sections of the Limes and important individual monuments are preserved in the Limes Park Rainau in an exceptional concentration; a reconstructed watchtower offers panoramic views across the Ostalb region. The Dalkingen Limes Gate is also a distinctive structure along the stretch of the Limes between the Rhine and the Danube.
For another hiking option in the Ostalbkreis, the Limes circular trail near Rainau is described as approximately 11 kilometres long, with a walking time of around 2.5 hours. It runs from the Limes wall and the Limes tower between Buch and Schwabsberg through Mahdholz Forest, following the Limes to the southern edge of Schwabsberg. This provides both a specific distance and time estimate, as well as a precise route to help you find your way.
Lorch Abbey offers a different historical focus. It was founded in 1102 as a burial place by the first Hohenstaufen ruler, Frederick I, and his wife Agnes of Waiblingen. The permanent exhibition explores 900 years of the abbey’s history, including through the decorated choir books of Lorch. Those interested in architecture and monastic history will find a different subject here from the Roman remains in Rainau.
At the Tiefer Stollen visitor mine, the mine railway passes through mineral deposits and small stalactites into sandstone halls covering 2,500 square metres, 100 metres underground. There, a multimedia show introduces visitors to the history of iron ore mining in the Aalen area. A circular route through the maze of tunnels leads to former underground mining areas with shafts, loading points and ore extraction chambers. Alongside hiking trails and Roman heritage, the Ostalbkreis therefore also offers monastic history and mining history as distinct subjects to explore.
