A circular trail with 11 stops, half-timbered houses in the town center and a local history museum with a chronological account of the town’s history offer different ways to explore Heubach: outdoors on the trail or by tracing the town’s development. The surrounding area also has a destination of its own to discover.

Hiking and outdoor activities around Heubach

The archaopfad ROSENSTEIN® is a 6 km circular trail across the plateau of the mountain massif. The route includes a total of 266 meters of elevation gain and 11 stops. If you don’t want to walk the entire loop, you can also explore it in sections. The route length, elevation gain and stops make it easy to gauge the scope before planning.

As another guide to activities, the Heubach Tour includes 14 selected stages in Heubach and the surrounding area. Activities listed include hiking, cycling, jogging, Nordic walking, mountain biking and climbing. This offers a range of ways to be active alongside the circular trail; the details about the stages refer to the Heubach Tour as a whole.

Nearby, the Rosenstein is described as a destination for an outing: towering rocks, ring ramparts dating from pre-Christian times, a castle ruin and far-reaching views define its landscape and historical features. The archaopfad and the Rosenstein offer different ways to plan your stay.

Half-timbered houses and Heubach’s history

Several half-timbered buildings form the town center of Heubach. The “Heubacher Geschichtssplitter” local history museum complements this impression with the key themes of Heubach’s history, presented chronologically.

A historical guided tour leads to the Blockturm and through the former weavers’ quarter; the “Anna Vetter” house is also visited. The tour date depends on guide availability. The Vetter House was the former home of Anna Vetter, a woman from Heubach. It is furnished with pieces that reflect the original living conditions. Visits to the house are by appointment.

Another way to explore history is available to schools, teachers and other groups: the Förderverein Schwäbisch Gmünder Schulmuseum e.V. offers them the chance to experience a lesson in a historic classroom as it would have been around 1900. Since December 2008, the classroom has been located in the Knights’ Hall of Heubach Castle. Please check the current arrangements for group visits with the provider.

The wider travel destination of Ostalbkreis offers further, distinct themes. In Rainau, the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes runs for about 6 km through the municipality and its districts of Buch, Schwabsberg and Dalkingen; it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. Sections and individual monuments are preserved in particularly high concentration in Limes-Park Rainau. A reconstructed watchtower offers panoramic views across the Ostalb region. The Limestor Dalkingen is an outstanding structure along the entire stretch of the Limes between the Rhine and Danube.

Another historical highlight in Ostalbkreis is Lorch Abbey. Frederick I, the first Hohenstaufen, and his wife Agnes of Waiblingen founded it in 1102 as their burial place. The complex includes, among other things, a medieval church, the cloister, service buildings and the Marsiliusturm, with views of the abbey grounds, gardens and surrounding area. The permanent exhibition presents 900 years of abbey history, including through the decorated Lorch choir books. These regional destinations broaden the perspective beyond Heubach’s half-timbered houses and local history without combining the different places into a single walking tour.
