Werbach combines cultural attractions in the main town with sights in the places that belong to the municipality: Gamburg, Wenkheim and Niklashausen. St. Martin’s Parish Church and the start of a circular hiking trail are in the main town; the castle, former synagogue and local history museum offer different points of interest. When planning your stay, you can choose between church architecture, history and trails through the countryside.

Churches, Castle and Historic Places

St. Martin’s Parish Church in Werbach, dedicated to Saint Martin, was built by architect August Mosbrugger from 1841 to 1843. Its organ was made in 1978 at the Vleugels organ workshop in Hardheim. The church’s construction period and the later instrument offer two distinct historical points of interest at the same location.

In Gamburg, which belongs to the municipality of Werbach, secular wall paintings dating from before 1219 can be found in a hall building at the castle that was originally Romanesque. They are described as the oldest north of the Alps. The village is also home to the castle park: a Baroque park decorated with statues and featuring botanical rarities. The Barons of Dalberg originally laid it out in the 17th century; it is considered an exceptional cultural monument.

In Wenkheim, the former synagogue preserves an original stucco coffered ceiling and a women’s gallery with a lattice screen. The mikveh there was used by Jewish men and women for ritual purification. These historic details offer a different perspective from the churches and castles in the municipality’s other places.

Niklashausen: Museum, Church and Cultural Trails

The local history museum in Niklashausen’s old town hall documents the life and work of Hans Böhm in the “Pfeiferstube” (Piper’s Room). Guided tours of the museum and the late Gothic church in Niklashausen are available by arrangement; it is best to arrange your visit before you travel. The church is a protected historic monument. Its foundation stone was laid in 1519, and the sacristy features a star vault. Niklashausen also has a wood-carved Baroque pulpit and a memorial plaque to Pfeiferhannes.

The Niklashausen Association for History and Culture maintains the Pfeiferweg hiking trail and a section of the European Cultural Route. Both trails connect culture and landscape. Alongside the museum and church, they offer another way to explore the area’s cultural history in the context of its landscape.

Hiking Trails and Outdoor Destinations

A circular hiking trail starts at the market square in Werbach and follows trail markers bearing a blue 1 on a white background. At the edge of town, it passes a volleyball court and a water-treading facility; the loop then returns to the market square via Hauptstraße. The route also follows Liebfrauenbrunnstraße and Blauer Rain road out of Werbach toward the nature reserves. Check the markers on site before following the route.

The municipality also has a well-developed, signposted network of trails for further hikes and bike rides. Another destination is the Liebfrauenbrunn pilgrimage chapel: it lies about 2.5 kilometres outside Werbach in the Welzbach valley, in the direction of Werbachhausen; a spring is located beneath the chapel. The Tauber near Werbach is a fishing spot for sport anglers. If you would like to fish there, check local permit requirements in advance.

Planning Visits and Dates

Guided tours of Gamburg Castle are offered on weekends and public holidays during the season, as well as by arrangement. Several weekends a year also feature drawing and painting courses for beginners and advanced participants. Check the current tour and course dates before travelling. This will help you decide whether a castle visit or a walk along one of the trails should be the focus of your day.

Visiting hours for the former synagogue in Wenkheim are listed as Saturdays and Sundays, May to October, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.; guided tours are available by telephone appointment. Confirm the current hours in advance. The synagogue also has an annual programme of readings, films, concerts and themed evenings; specific events may vary.

If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Werbach, it helps to decide which places you plan to visit first: St. Martin’s and the start of the circular trail are in the main town, while Gamburg Castle, the former synagogue in Wenkheim and the local history museum are in other places that belong to the municipality.
