Reicholzheim’s old settlement core lies on a river cut bank along a heavily meandering stretch of the Tauber, while also being above the flood zone. This combination of river form and village location gives your stay a distinctive landscape setting. Add to that a wine tradition, historic landmarks and hiking trails with a variety of stops.
Tauber Landscape and Local History
A cut bank lies on the outside of a river bend. Together with the Tauber’s pronounced meandering, the term describes a specific landform at the site of the old settlement core. A statue of St. John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of bridges, also stands on Reicholzheim’s Tauber Bridge.
Near Reicholzheim is the Steinkreuznest, the largest collection of stone crosses in southern Germany. The 14 sandstone crosses are embedded in a sandstone retaining wall. On a visit, the site is notable not only for the number of crosses, but also for their unusual arrangement in the wall. Together with the statue of St. Nepomuk on the bridge, the crosses offer two distinct ways to explore the local cultural heritage: a single image of a saint at a crossing, and an ensemble of several stone crosses.
Experience the Wine
Satzenberg is now considered one of Germany’s oldest vineyards. Guests can also experience the wine tradition at wine festivals and tastings, where winegrowers present their work in the vineyard and show how it becomes the wine in the glass. The vineyard and the tasting represent two different aspects of the subject: cultivation and the finished product. Check the dates of festivals and tastings separately before your trip.
Hiking Trails with a Variety of Stops
The LT-M1 hiking trail, “In the Footsteps of the Cistercians,” leads from Bronnbach past historic stone crosses and St. George’s Church in Reicholzheim, then back to the starting point. Its described route thus connects Bronnbach with historic wayside markers and a church building in Reicholzheim.
The LT 3 trail, “Between Wine and Faith,” features different landscape elements along the way. The route passes orchards and dry-stone walls before reaching a patch of woodland shortly before Reicholzheim, then continues gently uphill to the historic Chapel of the Holy Trinity. The Reicholzheim Circular Hiking Trail also recommends a visit to the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, where you can ring the bell. A short detour from this circular trail also leads to Hohen Felsen, a waterfall in an idyllic setting. The routes therefore differ in their specific stops: historic traces and a church on the LT-M1, orchards and a chapel on the LT 3, and a chapel and waterfall detour on the circular trail.
More Things to Do in Bronnbach
The “Brass Band Music on Sundays” concert series in the abbey garden of Bronnbach Monastery comprises five concerts by regional brass bands from May to September. Check the specific concert dates before your visit. Bronnbach railway station is on the opposite side of the Tauber; the monastery is about a five-minute walk from the station.
The Main-Tauber Archive Association, based in Bronnbach, offers archive tours for groups; advance booking is required. The Heimatverein Reicholzheim’s museum distillery in Bronnbach can be visited by arrangement, and schnapps tastings are also available by arrangement. Another attraction is the quince trail in Bronnbach, which preserves the historical diversity and uses of the quince through various old varieties, making it a living archive.
Culture in the Wider Destination of Wertheim
In the wider destination of Wertheim, Wertheim Castle offers a distinct historical focus: the stone castle ruin, built in the 12th century, stands on a spur above Wertheim between the Main and Tauber valleys. Guided tours cover the ruin’s past and present; check tour options before your trip. Also in Wertheim, the Glass Museum presents the history and uses of glass from antiquity to today’s glass industry in Wertheim. Hands-on exhibits include a Cartesian diver, a love meter, a hall of mirrors and a flea microscope; visitors can also watch the museum’s glassblower at work.
