Gentle hills, meadows, forests and numerous ponds shape Neukirch’s landscape, contrasted by the Argen’s wild, deeply cut course. This contrast lends a stay different qualities: on one side, the forest and cultural landscape; on the other, a striking river valley. Sacred sites and Sonnenhalde Wildlife Park add to the mix.
Hills, the Argen and wildlife
North of the Argen, the forest and cultural landscape is ideal for long hikes and exploring nature. Tours through the many small hamlets and along the Argen are especially appealing. Those who want to get to know Neukirch’s landscape will find more than a single focal point: meadows, forests, ponds and the river shape different aspects of the area.
Sonnenhalde Wildlife Park is in the district of Wildpoltsweiler. It is home to fallow deer, red deer, mouflons and wild boar. A 2.5-kilometre circular trail offers glimpses of local wildlife. The park also has an adventure playground, and pony rides are available. Before you arrive, check whether the playground is currently open and pony rides are being offered at the time of your visit.
Trails and viewpoints
The Neukirch Path of Faith is around 4.7 kilometres long. Its ten stations are located in Neukirch and the surrounding hamlets. Five of them feature large natural stones with plaques bearing the pastoral unit’s logo and a saying or verse. The route thus combines its course with clearly recognisable religious themes.
At 2.5 kilometres, the circular trail in the wildlife park is shorter than the Path of Faith, which is around 4.7 kilometres long. The two routes can therefore be compared by their stated lengths, although they do not share the same thematic focus.
From the Mariengrotte on Marienberg, the view extends across the town centre to the Allgäu Alps. Benches are available for resting. A church procession takes place at the grotto every year. If you would like to time your visit to coincide with this event, check the date in advance.
Chapels, churches and historic details
St. Ulrich’s Chapel in Elmenau contains rare frescoes from the 12th and 13th centuries. Their dating gives this sacred site its own historical significance. In Neukirch, the new parish church of St. Maria Rosenkranzkönigin was consecrated on 26 October 1980 by diocesan bishop Dr. Georg Moser.
St. Silvester Parish Church also contains historic details: the 14 Stations of the Cross were made in 1914 by the Güntert and Nägele art workshop in Sigmaringendorf. They are located in the old choir. Along with the frescoes in Elmenau and the stations on the Path of Faith, they represent different forms of sacred art and design.
The wider region: Bodenseekreis
The Bodenseekreis travel region covers a wider geographical area. It stretches along almost the entire northern shore of Lake Constance in Baden-Württemberg, extending into the Upper Swabian Hill Country and, to the east, the West Allgäu Hill Country. The district has 57.7 kilometres of Lake Constance shoreline. This regional perspective complements the specific view of Neukirch, whose landscape is shaped by hills, meadows, forests, ponds and the Argen.
