Gaienhofen combines literary history and art with walking routes and activities by the water. The Hesse Museum Gaienhofen, the art trail between the landing stages, and the Gaienhofen–Mittlere Höri circular walk offer different perspectives on the region. Hesse, literature and art on the Höri
The Hesse Museum Gaienhofen consists of two buildings: a former farmhouse dating from the 17th century and the adjacent former residence of Hermann Hesse. The former farmhouse houses the “Literaturlandschaft Höri” (Literary Landscape of the Höri) exhibition; it also permanently houses the “Künstlerlandschaft Höri” (Artists’ Landscape of the Höri) exhibition. The first presents the development of a diverse artistic and literary landscape on the Untersee. The second documents how numerous visual artists settled on the Höri from the beginning of the 20th century onward.
The permanent exhibition “Gaienhofener Umwege. Hermann Hesse und sein 1. Haus” (Gaienhofen Detours: Hermann Hesse and His First House) is housed in Hesse’s former home. Hermann Hesse lived in Gaienhofen from 1904 to 1912. Otto Dix also lived on the Höri: Hemmenhofen was his home from 1936 to 1969. Gaienhofen’s connection with Hesse and the history of visual art on the Höri can therefore be considered distinct yet closely connected cultural themes.
Art trail or circular walk?
For an art-focused itinerary, the “Experience the Landscape – Discover Art: Art Trail from Gaienhofen Pier” offers an approximate time frame: about two hours. It runs between the landing stages in Gaienhofen and Hemmenhofen. Along the way, steles mark locations where artists captured views of Lake Constance in their paintings. The art trail can be combined with a boat trip back from Hemmenhofen to Gaienhofen. If you plan to take the boat back, check the timetable for your chosen day.
The Gaienhofen–Mittlere Höri circular walk follows a different route. It is 12.61 kilometers long and passes through a nature reserve to Hornstaad, then follows the lakeshore back to Gaienhofen. The route is the main consideration when choosing a walk: the art trail runs between two landing stages and can be combined with a return boat trip, while the circular walk passes through a nature reserve and returns to Gaienhofen along the shore.
By the water and planning your visit
In the district of Horn, Strandbad Horn has a mini-golf course, a volleyball court and a restaurant. These offer another way to plan your day, alongside the cultural and historical attractions and walking routes.
Scheduled boats operated by the Untersee and Rhine Shipping Company serve Gaienhofen from Konstanz, Schaffhausen and Stein am Rhein. If you are traveling by boat or planning a boat connection as part of your outing, it is worth checking the current timetable against your travel date.
