Heiningen offers several distinct ways to enjoy an active trip while gaining specific insights into the town’s history. For outdoor activities, choose the 27-kilometre Voralb Route, which passes through Heiningen, or one of four routes in the Voralb Nordic Walking Park. Those interested in culture can explore the Historic Town Walk; the frescoes in St. Michael’s Church also offer remarkable subjects. When planning, consider the type and length of route, as well as your interest in history and art.

Paths and Routes in Heiningen

The four Nordic walking routes range from 3.5 to 14 kilometres and are suitable for everyone from beginners to more advanced athletes. They all start at the car park by the Voralbhalle. Having a shared starting point and a stated range of distances makes it easy to choose a route according to its length. Check local signs and current trail conditions before setting out.

The VORALB HERO is a different kind of route: this 1.6-kilometre singletrack runs through Heiningen’s municipal forest. In addition to the walking routes, this trail offers a shorter option with a distinct name. At 27 kilometres, the Voralb Route covers a considerably greater distance and passes through Heiningen. Rohrweg and Heubachwegrunde are other hiking trails in the municipality. As trail availability can change, it is a good idea to check locally before setting out.

Local History and Art

Local residents selected 21 stops for the Historic Town Walk and wrote the accompanying texts; most of those involved volunteered their time. Plaques on building walls provide information about the town’s history. QR codes link to further information from the municipality. The walk thus connects selected stops with texts written locally and additional digital information.

The frescoes in St. Michael’s Church in Heiningen are a subject in their own right. They depict St. Christopher, a rare Crucifixion scene showing Christ being nailed to the cross, dated 1398, and a “Volto Santo”—a depiction of Christ on the cross clothed. The motifs differ in both subject and representation; the precise date of the nailing to the cross provides a specific historical reference. This description of the art does not indicate whether the church can currently be visited.

More Leisure Activities

In summer 2014, Heiningen’s leisure offerings were expanded to include an 18-hole Pit-Pat course. If you would like to include it in your plans, check its current availability beforehand. This keeps the historical information about its addition separate from the question of whether the facility can be used today.

Regional Routes in the Wider Destination of Göppingen

The wider destination of Göppingen has other, separate route options. The Löwenpfade in the district of Göppingen are circular hiking trails ranging from 3 to 24 kilometres. They are signposted and marked in both directions; at each starting point, an information board shows the route, an elevation profile and sights along the way. For mountain biking, the Löwentrails comprise four circular routes from 16 to 30 kilometres. They are particularly suitable for beginners and e-mountain bikers. These options are part of the regional selection in Göppingen and should be distinguished from the specific trails named in Heiningen.
